The research offers a novel approach to studying the vaulted systems, proposing new parameters for a more inclusive classification that goes beyond the traditional-typology-geometric criteria. The new parameters are borrowed from the geometric-constructive concepts of the stereotomic lexicon (maîtresses voûtes, voûte sur le plan d'une autre voûte) and from the study of vaults presented by Guarino Guarini in the Architettura Civile (1737) (construction figures), the first treatise in Italy to introduce stereotomy. The study deals with the three variants of the brick-masonry cloister vaults: frame vaults, fasce vaults and planterian vaults. The cultural, geographical-temporal framework expands to Lombardy, Piedmont, part of Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, from the second half of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. During this period, an architectural and artistic heritage of incredible value has materialized, witnessing the spread of know-how kept by specialized groups of craftsmen active in Northern Italy. The research path employs an in-depth investigation of selected case studies to connect the constructive hypotheses developed following the technical literature. The geometrical survey was carried out through traditional and innovative instrumentation, such as laser scanning, photogrammetry and thermal imaging documentation. Catalogues were drafted for each 'family' of vaulted systems and added to the appendix. The database was created on GIS for open use of the data. On the one hand, the historical construction logic knowledge aims to reconstruct the 'history' and the 'dissemination' of the three families of vaults - defining the reasons underlying their diffusion. On the other hand, it improves the understanding of decay phenomena, contributing to a goal of great importance, not just technical-scientific, but also economic-social: to consciously preserve the built heritage.

Abstract
On the other hand, it improves the understanding of decay phenomena, contributing to a goal of great importance, not just technical-scientific, but also economic-social: to consciously preserve the built heritage.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
