Ai margini del vuoto : la riscoperta di uno spazio centrale

Following a first reading of the Milan Central Station district, our attention was immediately captured by the lack of identity of the place and its central position within the urban fabric, despite the typical problems of the peripheral areas of the city. The presence of the station and the railway embankment makes this place a space where more cultures meet with the following loss of certain boundaries but with the creation of new ones that are even more solid due to forms of ethnocentrism. This line preserves the relationship between identity and diversity, a place that places one individual in front of the other, a frontier, an environment that unites as it separates, capable of giving life to new forms of relationship. The thesis focuses on two of the most problematic types of relationships that characterize the neighborhood, interculturality and intergenerationality. To favor the latter, it was decided to intervene on some buildings along Via Sammartini, which are in a state of decay and abandonment that seems to be the mirror of some social phenomena of this area. The strong urban consolidation along the via Ferrante Aporti has emphasized the gaps along the via Sammartini, which is why it was decided to intervene in the design along some critical points of the road. The attention could only fall on some buildings on the edge of the void of the Magazzini Raccordati, through which we try to restore an identity to this place through the development of a linear path that reconnects the neighborhood and the inhabitants to the rest of the city.

In seguito a una prima lettura del quartiere della Stazione Centrale di Milano la nostra attenzione è stata fin da subito catturata dalla mancanza di identità del luogo e dalla sua posizione centrale all’interno del tessuto urbano, nonostante delle problematiche tipiche delle aree periferiche della città. La presenza della stazione e del rilevato ferroviario rende questo luogo uno spazio dove più culture si incontrano con la seguente perdita di determinati confini ma con la creazione di nuovi ancora più solidi dovute a forme di etnocentrismi. Questa linea custodisce il rapporto tra identità e diversità, un luogo che pone un individuo di fronte all’altro, una frontiera, un ambiente che unisce in quanto separa, capace di dar vita a nuove forme di relazione. La tesi verte su due delle tipologie più problematiche di relazione che caratterizzano il quartiere, l’interculturalità e l’intergenerazionalità. Per favorire quest’ultime si è deciso di intervenire su alcuni edifici lungo la via Sammartini, i quali si presentano in uno stato di degrado e abbandono che sembra essere lo specchio di alcuni fenomeni sociali di quest’area. Il forte consolidamento urbano lungo la via Ferrante Aporti ha enfatizzato le lacune lungo la via Sammartini, motivo per la quale si è deciso di intervenire progettualmente lungo alcuni punti critici della direttrice stradale. L’attenzione non poteva che ricadere su alcuni edifici ai margini del vuoto dei Magazzini Raccordati, attraverso la quale si cerca di ridare un’identità a questo luogo tramite lo sviluppo di un percorso lineare che riconnetta il quartiere e gli abitanti al resto della città.
