Abstract

The airport infrastructure has various functions both internally and externally, some of them are roles that it covers directly, others the result of indirect influences that it develops thanks to its main function. What this document will carry out will be a work of careful analysis, first of all, of the existing literature on this topic, analyzing the various points of view of the actors involved and of the authors who have analyzed this issue in depth, today more and more important. Secondly, some case studies will be taken into consideration, chosen to represent highly influential metropolitan cities on the European territory, selected through certain specific criteria, thanks to which it is possible to note how the presence of an airport within them has led them to develop on several fronts: urban, economic and social. This phenomenon, which began with the development of the airport infrastructures themselves, continues to this day bringing huge economic benefits, spurring the improvement of existing infrastructures and encouraging the creation of new services. The presence of the airport within these urban metropolises creates a network at different scales, starting from the local one up to the global one, where competitiveness and growth are the key words: the indirect influences that the latter creates lead to one development of a vast area around it, called the airport region and, at the same time, it attracts new economies making the same territory highly competitive at global scale. Its existence within the urban territory, and therefore, consequently, its proximity to inhabited centers creates many negative externalities and local conflicts, linked more to the noise and atmospheric pollution that the airport creates as a consequence of the increase in air traffic. The metropolitan cities, protagonists of this document are: the city of Lisbon, Amsterdam, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main and finally the city of London. Each of them is characterized, in fact, by the presence of an airport within the urban area that develops a global network. For this reason, thanks to these case studies, the pros and cons of its presence in the vicinity of residential and commercial areas will be analyzed, emphasizing both the benefits and the negative impacts that this infrastructure can bring.
