Abstract

With the population of the cities growing at a high rate, the problem of congested roads is becoming more and more severe. A possible solution is Urban Air Mobility, which aims at getting mobility off the ground to the air. In the future, Air Taxis could fly us to work or to school in a fast and safe way, as well as environmentally sustainable. The vehicles designed for this new way of travelling are aerial vehicles capable of taking off and landing vertically, in order to take advantage of the narrow spaces available in the cities. Moreover, these vehicles will be electrically powered and quiet, to guarantee a small environmental footprint. The present work aims at investigating the UAM topic through the Intellectual Property. By analysing the results of a proper research performed on the patent documents’ database Espacenet, we wish to characterize the subject under examination declined in four sub-categories: propulsion, configuration, control systems and safety. For each of them, the trend of publication, the major players, the main countries involved and the technological trend have been delineated. The target is on one hand to define the state of the art and on the other hand to ascertain the future trends.
