The project of the Amba Aradam / Ipponio station-museum of Metro C in Rome is based on the relationship between metropolitan infrastructural planning and the complexity of the stratification of the historical city, a cultural as well as physical journey through past and present. The Amba Aradam / Ipponio metro station is part of the new section T3, the metropolitan section connecting the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano and the Imperial Forums, and has become an opportunity to “musealize”, or to show in situ, the archaeological ruins found during the excavations, which began in 2015 under the artistic direction of the Special Archaeological Superintendence of Rome. During 2015, the Castra of Amba Aradam, a military complex from the Hadrianic age (2nd century AD), were discovered, while in 2017 the Commander's Domus was found at a lower level. The Superintendence, from the point of view of the design, has imposed the maintenance of the archaeological ruins in the site and to ensure a visual connection of the same with the Aurelian Walls. The decision to propose this topic for the degree thesis path is related to the participation in the Workshop "The Castra of Hadrian" in 2017, promoted by Professor Paolo Desideri (Studio ABDR Architetti Associati) who has been involved in the architectural design of the metro station since 2016. The workshop involved the design of the reception area or atrium of the station only. This experience led me to imagine working on a larger project, which also took into account the relationship with the urban context on the surface. Due to its complexity, the project was defined at different scales of definition, starting with the insertion of the new pole within the Capitoline urban context including the Amba Aradam/Ipponio metro station and the square above. At the architectural scale the goal was instead to connect the three levels which are the city soil, the second century AD layer and the train platforms. In order to maintain a clear logic in the access and use of the spaces, the idea was not to force passengers to walk through the archaeological ruins, creating for this reason a differentiation between the entry/exit routes, also considering the morphology of the urban context above. The multiple constraints dictated by the complexity of the project meant that the station didn’t end up to be one of the many anonymous places of passage in the life of the contemporary citizen, making the traveler join the greatness of the historical heritage of the city.

Abstract
The multiple constraints dictated by the complexity of the project meant that the station didn’t end up to be one of the many anonymous places of passage in the life of the contemporary citizen, making the traveler join the greatness of the historical heritage of the city.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
