Research suggests that the process of burying our loved ones is what separates us from other living species and makes us human, this might be true as it is something we have intrinsically continued to do along history and into contemporary times. Through changes based on religions and even local traditions, and influenced by many factors including social class or disease control, burial sites and rites form part of our identity as human beings. Looking back at this evolution, one can see how humans have always invested time and effort in a place which seems built for the dead, however it has the most effect on the living. This research will study the needed balance for funerary architecture to comply with someone’s wishes while still accomplishing the mourning process, which we will define as a fundamental step for the grieving community, while allowing the rituals to change in order to satisfy new burial techniques and increase the conversation on morality and dignity of the dead. This thesis aims to approach this conversation regarding the cemeteries which have ended up in the middle of our urban fabric. Observing their capacity to evolve and become a healthier space for society’s need for reconciliation with death. Learning from masterworks, and their use of the landscape and architecture, an evaluation will be done on how existing cemeteries would benefit from small transformations, in order to reconnect the city of the living with the city of the dead.

Abstract
Learning from masterworks, and their use of the landscape and architecture, an evaluation will be done on how existing cemeteries would benefit from small transformations, in order to reconnect the city of the living with the city of the dead.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
