This thesis has as main objective the analysis of the spread of COVID-19 in Italy according to an economic geographic approach, trying to understand if the agglomeration of industries – the presence of industrial districts - could have had a key-role in the very rapid spread of the virus in the northern regions of the country during the first wave. The same analysis will be run also for the second wave, in order to compare the spread of COVID-19 in the two different periods. Regarding the methodology, for every Italian province have been collected data regarding COVID-19 cases, agglomeration of industries and other demographic factors. Then, analysing this data, in particular with multiple linear regressions, it has been possible to compare the effect and the influence of the variables relating the agglomeration of industries on the number of COVID-19 cases during both the first and second viral wave. The results seem suggest that the agglomeration of industries and so the presence of districts have had a key role in the spread of the virus only during the first viral wave, influencing in a significative way the first heavily hit zones and provinces.
Questa tesi ha come obiettivo principale l'analisi della diffusione del COVID-19 in Italia secondo un approccio geografico economico, in modo tale da capire se l'agglomerazione di industrie, e quindi la presenza di distretti industriali, abbia ricoperto un ruolo chiave nella rapidissima diffusione del virus nelle regioni settentrionali del paese durante la prima ondata. La stessa analisi verrà condotta anche per la seconda ondata, al fine di confrontare la diffusione del COVID-19 nei due diversi periodi. Per quanto riguarda la metodologia, per ogni provincia italiana sono stati raccolti dati relativi a casi di COVID-19, agglomerazione di industrie e altri fattori demografici. Quindi, analizzando questi dati, in particolare con regressioni lineari multiple, è stato possibile confrontare l'effetto e l'influenza delle variabili relative all'agglomerazione delle industrie sul numero di casi di COVID-19 sia durante la prima che la seconda ondata virale. I risultati sembrano suggerire che l'agglomerazione delle industrie e quindi la presenza dei distretti abbiano avuto un ruolo chiave nella diffusione del virus solo durante la prima ondata virale, influenzando in modo significativo le prime zone e province pesantemente colpite.
