MADD (Modern Art District Darserna) is the project for the renovation and re-functionalization of the former Jutificio Romagnolo, once a nationally renowned company for the production of jute bags. The former factory, overlooking the Candiano canal, is located in the heart of the Darsena district, the old industrial area of Ravenna, which has always been functionally and urbanistically isolated from the city. The complex, built in 1910, has undergone over the years numerous building implementations and several changes of ownership, factors that have gradually mined the identity of the buildings composing it. From the architectural point of view, the project proposes to streamline the current plant by demolishing the various historical layers which hide the industrial and valuable buildings. The peculiarity of the architectural project lies in the accurate on-site surveys and the in-depth historical research carried out, which brought to light the main elevations of the production block, originally characterized by large mullioned and three-light arch windows and enriched by brick decorations. Regarding the materials, the intervention on these elements was marked by the use of Cor-Ten steel plates, a material that has always been part of the industrial world. Ravenna, and specifically the Darsena area, has been in recent years the subject of major urban redevelopment, supported by a municipal planning tool such as the POC Darsena (Piano Operativo Comunale Darsena), whose constraints and directives will affect the project. It defines the path for the renovation of abandoned industrial complexes through the creation of spaces dedicated to sports, culture and art and through the creation of parks and thematic routes, which will finally connect this large area with the city. In order to understand the social climate in which the site is located, extensive surveys were conducted during the development of the thesis that directly involved the citizens of Ravenna. These surveys revealed the need of dedicated spaces for artistic events; usually hosted by the many local associations that presently do not have a designated place to do so. Additionally, the young-adult population does not recognize Ravenna as a center for nightlife, leading them to move to coastal resorts, in search of recreational opportunities. Therefore the MADD project aims to create a large flexible event space marked by a tensile structure that allows it to be used for multiple activities throughout the year, also thanks to the functional and occasional integration, through various configurations, of two food markets and two spaces for temporary exhibitions. This will allow the city to host large musical events and artistic manifestations also at a regional level. The project, having a far greater vocation than what the city is offering at the moment, is expected to implement tourism and, above all, dedicate a safe and well recognizable place to the social gatherings that take place in Darsena. Consistent with this vision, the MADD space gives meaning to the word “Modern” by detaching itself from the idea of “classical” art that has always distinguished the city of Ravenna due to the famous mosaics and Byzantine art. This emphasizes the past of the Darsena district as an industrial area isolated from the city and at the same time crucial for it. Finally, in support of the physical spaces and lining up with the prescriptions of the POC, we find the great Park of the Arts, of which the project constitutes the “artistic heart”. In a perspective of the feasibility of the project and sustainable renovation of the buildings, the following thesis proposes at the end the realization of a technological and structural project of the market elements and tensile structure with related confirmation of their stability and project performance in compliance with the legislation. In particular the tensile structure, given its complexity due to the synthesis between the pre-existing and the need to create a cover for the events space, has required specific analysis through special software which was followed by the consolidation of the alongside buildings interconnected to it.
