Project management : a guide for projects acceleration

This thesis focuses on understanding how projects can be accelerated within companies and in developing an operative model, which could be applied in different sectors. The reasons why a project may undergo an acceleration can be found in the needs of recovering delays or in the needs of exploiting new arising projects. Both will be investigated in the thesis with the aim of steering managers towards an effective acceleration program. The thesis will be articulated in sections. The initial part comprehends the understanding of what a project is, how and why delays arise in projects and how projects’ status can be monitored throughout its lifecycle. The central part is focused on the available acceleration methods for projects and on their application in real life cases. The final part of the thesis in dedicated to the analysis of companies’ strategies to accelerate projects. The thesis aims at simplifying Projects Management, allowing manager to choose the best accelerating technique for their specific project. To address this theme, we provide companies with a questionnaire, from which we were able to determine how they react to unexpected delays, arising during projects’ lifecycle. Having the opportunity to interact with business experts from different sectors, has allowed to lay the foundations for a wider understanding of the phenomena related to the acceleration of projects: The study can also be used to reach a digital diffusion and implementation of a tool that is useful for industry managers. , whereas there seems to be room for an operational guide considering that more than 45% of the companies surveyed have shown willingness to use a guide capable of providing an objective solution to the issue of accelerating projects.

Questa tesi è incentrata nel comprendere i metodi tramite i quali è possibile accelerare i progetti e sullo sviluppare uno strumento operativo che possa essere utilizzato in aziende di diverso settore. Le ragioni per cui un progetto può essere accelerato sono da ricondursi al necessario recupero di ritardi o a nuove opportunità che si sono manifestate e che richiedono una conclusione anticipata dei progetti già iniziati. La tesi è articolata in sezioni. Nella parte iniziale, ci siamo concentrati nel raccogliere informazioni riguardo la definizione di progetto, su come possono nascere dei ritardi durante tutto il suo ciclo e su come viene monitorato lo stato di avanzamento dei lavori. La parte successiva tratta i vari metodi ad oggi indicati in letteratura ed utilizzabili per poter accelerare un progetto e le loro applicazioni a casi reali. L’ultima parte dell’elaborato di tesi, è dedicata alle analisi delle strategie, adottate dalle aziende intervistate, nella gestione di un piano di accelerazione. L’elaborato ha infatti, come obiettivo, semplificare la gestione dei progetti permettendo così ai manager di poter scegliere il miglior metodo di accelerazione per ciascun progetto in essere. Per poter affrontare questo tema, abbiamo raccolto tramite un questionario, risposte da aziende, operative in diversi settori così da comprendere come esse reagiscano ad eventi inaspettati che fanno sorgere ritardi durante il corso di un progetto e con quali strumenti intervengano nel tentativo di recuperare i ritardi accumulati. Avere la possibilità di interagire con esperti aziendali di diversi settori, ha permesso di gettare le basi per una più ampia comprensione dei fenomeni connessi all’accelerazione dei progetti: lo studio compiuto potrà anche essere utilizzato per giungere ad una implementazione digitale di uno strumento che sia di utilità per i manager di settore. Sembra esserci spazio per una guida operativa considerando che più del 45% delle aziende intervistate ha mostrato disponibilità a ricorrere ad una guida capace di fornire una soluzione oggettiva al tema dell’accelerazione dei progetti.
