Il Novecento a Mantova : progetto di ampliamento del museo della città

The central idea of the thesis is related to the desire to continue the narration of the museum of the city of Mantua, located in the palace of San Sebastiano. This building, built at the beginning of the sixteenth century at the limits of the city protected by the walls, is the spokesman of the history of Mantua. The rich story of the city is now interrupted, and many prestigious collections lay in the museum’s deposits. Moreover, the section about the XX century is still missing. Since the twentieth century Mantua and the way it related with the ancient city is unique (it forced the boundaries of the city and entered the dense and stratified urban fabric), the aim of the thesis is to narrate these events, within the project of the expansion of the Civic Museum. The study of the city of the twentieth century, supported by an extensive cartographic research, has highlighted the weak connection, inherited from the old walls, between the historical city and the modern city. Therefore, the project aspires to enhance this link throughout the “Percorso del Principe”, the axis that used to connect the Ducal Palace with the suburban villa of Palazzo Te during the Renaissance. The museum itinerary that crosses the city now finds a crucial center in the San Sebastiano complex where a new square is designed on the road which was the privileged by the Gonzaga.

La tesi nasce dalla volontà di proseguire la narrazione, oggi sospesa, del museo della città di Mantova, sito nel palazzo di San Sebastiano. Questo, sorto all’inizio del Cinquecento ai limiti della città protetta dalle mura, si fa portavoce della storia mantovana. Il racconto ricchissimo sulla città, tuttavia, si interrompe, collocando nei depositi del museo prestigiose collezioni e omettendo la sezione relativa al XX secolo. Vista la peculiarità del Novecento mantovano - costretto a forzare i confini di una città protetta dalla cinta muraria e da una natura che assecondava gli scopi difensivi o a insinuarsi nel denso e stratificato tessuto urbano - si propone di narrare le vicende che lo caratterizzano, progettando l’ampliamento del museo civico. Lo studio stesso della città del Novecento, affiancato da un’ampia e puntuale ricerca cartografica, ha messo in luce la debole connessione, eredità delle vecchie mura, tra la città storica e la città moderna. Si propone pertanto di rinforzare questo legame e ricucire la città lungo il Percorso del Principe, l’asse che nel Rinascimento collegava Palazzo Ducale con la villa suburbana di Palazzo Te. Il percorso museale, che attraversa la città, trova ora un nodo nevralgico nel complesso di San Sebastiano, che si amplia creando una nuova piazza sulla via privilegiata dei Gonzaga.
