Envisioning Ca' Granda. A new identity for affordable housing and public spaces

The regular and uniform repetition of identical spaces characterizes in an unmistakable way the urban morphology of the Ca’ Granda district, in the Niguarda area, northern outskirts of the city of Milan. This spatial configuration, however, is not able to provide an adequate response to the multifaceted and enterprising soul that has always characterized this part of the city. The thesis project, indeed, aspires to give voice to the cultural and social ferment that animates this neighborhood, through an integrated intervention of recovery and redevelopment of existing buildings strongly connected to volumes of new construction, in order to give life to a dynamic and constructive dialogue between past and present. Looking back to the history of the district, we can highlight some topical elements that have defined the identity of the neighborhood since then. The goal of the thesis is to start from the identity of the place, analyzing its spaces and uses, to revive a neighborhood that over the years has undergone a process of exclusion from the dynamics that characterized the northern suburbs of Milan. With these aims, the main design strategies are realized through the development of potentialities already present in the neighborhood, such as the network of associations active in the area and the large presence of green spaces, integrating it with the new ways of contemporary living, to open the neighborhood to the process of evolution that has been characterizing the city of Milan in the last years.

La scansione regolare e uniforme di spazi identici tra loro caratterizza in modo inconfondibile la morfologia urbana del quartiere di Ca’ Granda, nella zona di Niguarda, nord della città di Milano. Questa configurazione spaziale, però, non è in grado di fornire una risposta adeguata all’anima sfaccettata e intraprendente che da sempre caratterizza questa parte della città. Il progetto di tesi, infatti, aspira dare voce al fermento culturale e sociale che ha sempre animato questo quartiere, ma che emerge solo dopo un’attenta ricerca e numerose osservazioni dirette lungo le strade di Ca’Granda. L’obiettivo finale è quello di dare vita ad un dialogo dinamico e costruttivo tra passato e presente che coinvolge spazi verdi, piazze e percorsi pubblici, tanto quanto gli interni delle singole unità abitative. Questo è possibile attraverso un intervento integrato di recupero e riqualificazione degli edifici esistenti fortemente connessi a volumi di nuova costruzione incorporati al progetto di riqualificazione degli spazi aperti circostanti. Ripercorrendo la storia del quartiere, emergono degli elementi topici che ne hanno definito le caratteristiche identitarie mantenute fino ad oggi. L’obiettivo della tesi è quello di partire dall’identità del luogo, analizzarne spazi ed usi, al fine di ridare vita ad un’area che, negli anni, ha subito un processo di esclusione dalle dinamiche che caratterizzano la periferia nord di Milano. Con questi obiettivi, le strategie progettuali principali si concretizzano nello sviluppare potenzialità già presenti, come la rete di associazioni attive sul territorio e la grande presenza di spazi verdi, connessi all’introduzione di nuovi modi dell’abitare contemporaneo per aprire il quartiere al processo di evoluzione che caratterizza la città circostante già da alcuni anni.
