Abitare l'Antartide. Studi di vivibilità in ambienti ostili

Antarctica: a hostile and inhospitable continent, out of sight of all and therefore unexplored for centuries. A white continent where ice, that reigns supreme, has fascinated the most daring explorers for a few decades, pushing researchers to the ends of the world to discover the unknown. Over the centuries, what has changed in the Antarctic continent is not only the climate and the amount of ice that melts and detaches every year, but what has changed is the perception and the idea that it may not be so hostile and that it can offer new possibility for research and development. Although an over a century has passed since the first explorations, the settlements have become more and more stable and avant-garde other more, there was a real evolution in architecture and technologies and giant steps have been taken. This thesis aims to understand how it is possible to face the life in the far south of our planet, offering not only a research station, but a work system that goes beyond the conditions of essential life, including a brand new concept of residential program, trying to create an integrated core that respects the principles of Antarctic Treaty, but above all that it is a source of inspiration for technologies future.

L’Antartide: un continente ostile, inospitale, lontano dagli occhi di tutti e per questo inesplorato per secoli. Un continente bianco dove il ghiaccio, che regna sovrano, affascina da qualche decennio gli esploratori più temerari, spingendo i ricercatori fino ai confini del mondo per scoprire l’ignoto. Nei secoli ciò che è cambiato del continente antartico non è solo il clima e la quantità di ghiaccio che ogni anno si scioglie e si distacca, ma è cambiata la percezione, l’idea che esso possa non essere poi così ostile e che possa offrire nuove possibilità per la ricerca e lo sviluppo. Sebbene sia trascorso poco più un secolo dalle prime esplorazioni, gli insediamenti si sono fatti sempre più stabili e all’avanguardia; vi è stata una vera e propria evoluzione nelle architetture e nelle tecnologie e si son compiuti passi da gigante. Questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di comprendere come sia possibile affrontare la vita all’estremo sud del nostro pianeta, proponendo non solo una stazione di ricerca, ma un sistema abitativo e lavorativo che si spinga oltre alle condizioni di vita essenziali, cercando di creare un nucleo integrato che rispetti i principi del Trattato Antartico, ma soprattutto che sia fonte di ispirazione per le tecnologie future.
