La (in)sostenibilità dell'architettura. Sviluppi e progetti per un'architettura a basso impatto ambientale

This paper is based on the deep relationship between architecture and environment, in which the former develops itself. Nowadays, the environment is subjected to the worrisome situation of climate change. What can architecture do about it? How has it changed to deal with these problems? What has it been done to allow us to call it sustainable? This paper tries to answer these questions and investigates in depth a new way of being of architecture, which challenges an excessive use of natural and exhaustible resources available. Contemporary sustainable housing is a necessity, not a whim. Therefore, as new architects, we aim to understand how to develop and construct buildings that could be better both for people and the environment. For this reason, this paper would consider and investigate the different facets of sustainable architecture, acknowledging that their share final goal is to satisfy and find a practical response to environmental needs. The common thread of this work is an endless search of a new architectural approach that would less affect the environment. The environmental historical evolution, which has been pressuring us to become more sensitive towards nature and our surroundings, will be considered. Afterwards, these days cultural debate will be discussed, allowing us to identify architectural features that characterised the response to the inevitable environmental crisis. Finally, it will be suggested a sort of handbook containing some guidelines about the topic discussed in this research, which will be inferred from some actual cases. Although the search for a new approach will always come up against the reality, considering that architecture will never be 100% sustainable, efforts to get close to this goal are essential for the Earth survival.

Questo scritto si basa sulla relazione profonda che lega l’architettura all’ambiente nel quale essa si attua. Un ambiente che oggi è investito da una preoccupante emergenza climatica. Cosa può fare dunque l’architettura? Come si è trasformata per far fronte a tali problematiche? Cosa ha fatto fino ad ora per potersi definire sostenibile? L’elaborato, cercando di dare delle risposte, indaga a fondo un nuovo modo di fare architettura che mette in discussione l’affidarsi a un consumo spropositato delle risorse naturali ed esauribili a disposizione. La sostenibilità dell’abitare contemporaneo non è un capriccio, ma una necessità. Dunque l’obiettivo da porci, come nuovi architetti, è capire come realizzare costruzioni migliori sia per noi che per l’ambiente. Ecco perché in questa tesi vengono esplorate le sfaccettature che l’architettura sostenibile assume, riconoscendo anche che tutte conservano come scopo ultimo quello di dare una risposta concreta alle esigenze ambientali. A partire dall’evoluzione storica ambientalista, che ci ha spinti verso una maggiore sensibilità nei confronti della natura, riflettendo sul dibattito culturale in atto, identificandone i caratteri architettonici in risposta all’inevitabile crisi ambientale per poi costruire una sorta di manuale con indicazioni generali analizzando alcuni casi pratici, il filo conduttore di questo lavoro è la ricerca continua di un approccio architettonico che sia meno impattante nei confronti dell’ambiente. Una ricerca che si scontrerà sempre con la realtà: l’architettura non potrà mai essere sostenibile al 100%. Tuttavia gli sforzi per far sì che essa tenda il più possibile a tale condizione valgono per assicurare la sopravvivenza del nostro pianeta.
