Wheelchair users can find it very limiting to work independently, especially in an outdoor environment. Many obstacles contribute to this issue, including self-confidence (linked to physical or social limitations of each individual), architectural barriers, and challenging environments. The objective of this thesis is to design a product to help grant independence to wheelchair users in an outdoor work setting, allowing for more autonomy and – at the same time – avoiding social exclusion. Following an organised design methodology, an outdoor workstation was designed. Beginning with environment- user-product research, a concept was reached which was further developed, refined, and tested through a combination of design and engineering. The process resulted in an accessible workstation for outdoor use: Vīnea. The compact shape allows different units to be assembled in a modular way, while still maintaining personal regulation features for each user. Transportation and storage are safe and easy thanks to integrated wheels and reduction of the overall volume. Particular attention was paid to material and component selection which were evaluated to guarantee long lifespans in demanding weather and terrain conditions. The final product was created from the starting point of user needs, thus resulting in a simple and functional product that is democratically accessible. Wheelchair users can comfortably and confidently operate Vīnea, making the most of their natural and social surroundings.
Persone su sedia a rotelle possono incontrare impedimenti che limitano la loro operatività, soprattutto in un ambiente all’aperto. Molti ostacoli contribuiscono a questo problema, tra cui la fiducia in se stessi (legata ai limiti fisici o sociali di ciascun individuo), le barriere architettoniche e i terreni accidentati. L'obiettivo di questa tesi è progettare un prodotto che aiuti a garantire maggiore indipendenza a utenti su sedia a rotelle in un ambiente di lavoro all'aperto, consentendo una migliore autonomia e, al contempo, evitando l'esclusione sociale. Seguendo una metodologia progettuale organizzata, è stata ideata una postazione di lavoro per uso esterno. Partendo dalla ricerca ambiente-utente-prodotto, è stato raggiunto un concept, il quale è stato ulteriormente sviluppato, perfezionato e testato attraverso una combinazione di design e ingegneria. Il processo ha generato una postazione di lavoro accessibile per uso esterno: Vīnea. La forma compatta consente di assemblare diverse unità in maniera modulare, mantenendo caratteristiche di regolazione personali a discrezione di ciascun utente. Il trasporto e lo stoccaggio sono facili e sicuri grazie alle ruote integrate e alla riduzione del volume complessivo. Inoltre, particolare attenzione è stata dedicata alla scelta dei materiali e dei componenti, i quali sono stati valutati con lo scopo di garantire una lunga durata in condizioni climatiche e di terreno sfavorevoli. La postazione di lavoro è stata sviluppata partendo dalle esigenze dell'utente, risultando dunque in un prodotto semplice e funzionale che è democraticamente accessibile. Gli utenti su sedia a rotelle possono utilizzare Vīnea in modo confortevole e sicuro, sfruttando al massimo il proprio ambiente naturale e sociale.
