Abstract

The historical moment we are currently living in, is giving us a number of different challenges. Climate change is making a profound impact on the consciousness of humanity. The role of design and innovation is now more than ever addressed to reduce consumption and waste. One of the drivers of this change is the rapid progress of bio-based materials. Over the last decade, in fact, designers have started fabricating new materials utilizing the natural processes of growth and reproduction of living organisms such as fungi, bacteria and algae. From fashion to design, from architecture to construction, bio-materials and their applications are multiplying. Specifically, mycelium is the interwoven network of fungal filamentous cells and can grow on a wide variety of organic substrates. This material is a sustainable alternative to plastics, polystyrene foams and animal leather in the fields of -among others- packaging, furniture, building materials and fashion industry. This dissertation explores the possibilities of mycelium in the industrial production field. The research process first and the design process after, will lead to the design of a mycelium bicycle helmet. The thesis is divided in seven chapters, that mirrors seven macro topics. Within these chapters a number of micro topics, related to the project challenges, features and opportunities, will be analysed. The first chapter is dedicated to the analysis and comprehension of mycelium, its properties and its current application on the market. The second chapter takes into account different methods for the material design experience. The conclusion of this chapter will guide the structure and further developments of the project. The third chapter is an illustration of the first approaches and experimentations with the material, that led to the understanding of the material potentiality and, subsequently, the material application choice in a product. In the fourth chapter is explained the values of the project and well as the process that led to the choice of a bike helmet as a product to apply mycelium to. The fifth chapter is an in-depth analysis of bicycle helmets, their materials and manufacturing process, their benchmarking and safety standards. The penultimate chapter finally describes in detail the design and research process of MyHelmet. Lastly, the conclusion chapter is a sum up and highlight the main achievements reached throug this project.
