Progetto per la realizzazione della nuova sede della biblioteca unificata dell'area umanistica dell'università Roma La Sapienza

The way a society treats books is a prediction of its fate. The project for the Library for the humanities area of La Sapienza University in Rome comes from an incomplete and inaccurate call for bids. Our first desire, in agreement with the thesis supervisor, was to rework the requests to adapt the library to higher and more innovative standards, which would reflect the university’s needs for unification and functionality. The thesis was articulated with thoughtful choices inspired by the sensations and atmospheres experienced during the survey and the months of research on the state of art. The typical light and materiality of Rome guided us in every decision-making phase, both architectural and technical. We would like to establish with the context a do ut des aimed at the multifaceted, stimulating and never predictable social environment. From this perspective, the library should unify broadly speaking: not only should it bring together the volumes, but it should become a meeting place for the citizens of the neighborhood, who have been looking for one for a lot of time, through the application of the Third Mission. The spirit of the place moved us to design a building that was typical of the project site and which, if denaturalised by the context in which it is located, would lose its meaning. The technical choices have supported the architectural project in its entirety and are therefore in symbiosis with each other. The thesis process has developed in a circular way: there was no univocal consequentiality, each choice influenced and was influenced by the others.

Il modo in cui una società tratta i libri è il presagio del suo destino. Il progetto per la Biblioteca per l’area umanistica dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma nasce da un bando di concorso lacunoso e impreciso. La nostra prima volontà, in accordo con il relatore di tesi, è stata quella di rielaborare le richieste per adeguare la biblioteca a degli standard più elevati e innovativi, che rispecchiassero le esigenze di unificazione e funzionalità dell’università. Il percorso di tesi si è articolato con scelte ponderate ispirate dalle sensazioni e dalle atmosfere vissute durante il sopralluogo e i mesi di ricerca sullo stato dell’arte. La luce e la matericità tipiche di Roma ci hanno guidate in ogni fase decisionale, sia architettonica che tecnica. Vorremmo stabilire con il contesto un do ut des rivolto all’ambiente sociale multiforme, stimolante e mai scontato. In quest’ottica la biblioteca dovrebbe unificare in senso lato: non solo dovrebbe riunire i volumi, ma dovrebbe diventare luogo di aggregazione per i cittadini del quartiere, che da tempo ne cercano uno, attraverso l’applicazione della Terza Missione. Lo spirito del luogo ci ha mosse a disegnare un edificio che fosse proprio del sito di progetto e che, se snaturato dal contesto in cui si trova, perdesse di significato. Le scelte tecniche hanno assecondato il progetto architettonico nella sua completezza e sono per questo in simbiosi tra loro. Il percorso di tesi si è per questo sviluppato in modo circolare: non è esistita una consequenzialità univoca, ogni scelta ha influenzato ed è stata influenzata dalle altre.
