Healing broken landscape through an ecological approach. Sesto Calende case study

The theme that this thesis addresses is the need to formulate a strategy for governing the transformation of human landscapes, centered primarily on the inclusion and enhancement of environmental aspects. The case study chosen is Sesto Calende, a small town straddling Lake Maggiore and the Ticino River, which due to its highly strategic location is historically a key point in the dynamics of Northern Italy. The general approach starts from an analysis at territorial scale, in order to identify and highlight the landscape and ecological values, necessary for the drafting of a project with a strong systemic value. The interventions proposed at the urban scale not only refer to the territorial scale while maintaining close relationships, but propose to bring attention to the type of spaces that the current urban expansion is generating, and show how it is possible to integrate these non-places in the dynamics of the city, exploit them to ensure the continuity of urban fabrics, but especially how to make them engines able to trigger a chain transformation that affects the whole territory.

La tematica che questa tesi affronta è la necessità di formulare una strategia di governo delle trasformazioni dei paesaggi antropici, centrata soprattutto sull’inclusione e la valorizzazione degli aspetti ambientali. Il caso studio scelto è Sesto Calende, una piccola cittadina a cavallo tra il Lago Maggiore ed il fiume Ticino, che per la sua posizione altamente strategica è storicamente un punto chiave nelle dinamiche del Nord Italia. L’approccio generale parte da un’analisi a scala territoriale, atta ad individuare e portare in evidenza le valenze paesistiche ed ecologiche, necessarie per la stesura di un progetto con una forte valenza sistemica. Gli interventi proposti a scala urbana non solo si rifanno alla scala territoriale mantenendo stretti rapporti, ma si propongono di portare l’attenzione sulla tipologia di spazi che l’attuale espansione urbana sta generando, e mostrare come sia possibile integrare questi non-luoghi nelle dinamiche della città, sfruttarli per garantire la continuità dei tessuti urbani, ma soprattutto come renderli dei motori in grado di innescare una trasformazione a catena che interessi tutto il territorio.
