Firescapes. Resetting the question of public space in matter of climate and social change in Athens

Climate change is happening and the consequences are evident on the daily life. The temperature continues rising and in summers the situation is getting worse. We have the urban heat island effect in the cities, where all the cities are “burned” due to a large amount of concrete surfaces and the lack of green. At the same time, we have also the wildfires during the summer that cause damage to thousands of hectares of green land every year, all around the world. In Greece, wildfires consist an annual problem that happens due to the high temperatures and the lack of prevention methods. Last summer, fires burned forestry areas and a lot of houses also in the capital of the country, in Athens.Athens is a city with a lot of historical background and at the same time a chaotic city with anarchic building environment and no precautions for extreme events like wildfires. Our project is located in the historical center of Athens and our attempt was to redesign the place, under the needs of fire protection strategies, both in the urban and natural part. Our focused points of interest are first, a basic urban corridor of the city and how we can manage the urban heat island effect there and second, the Lycabettus hill that is one of the most important natural points inside the city. In the second, our design focuses on the prevention and the confrontation of a future summer fire. Our “Firescapes” is a try to change the landscape of Athens by resetting the question of public space in a matter of social and climate change.

Il cambiamento climatico è in atto e le conseguenze sono evidenti sulla vita quotidiana. La temperatura continua a salire e in estate la situazione peggiora. Abbiamo l'effetto isola di calore urbana nelle città, dove tutte le città vengono "bruciate" a causa della grande quantità di superfici in cemento e della mancanza di verde. Allo stesso tempo, abbiamo anche gli incendi durante l'estate che ogni anno causano danni a migliaia di ettari di terreno verde, in tutto il mondo. In Grecia, gli incendi costituiscono un problema annuale che si verifica a causa delle alte temperature e della mancanza di metodi di prevenzione. L'estate scorsa gli incendi hanno bruciato aree forestali e molte case anche nella capitale del Paese, ad Atene. Atene è una città con un grande background storico e allo stesso tempo una città caotica con un ambiente edilizio anarchico e nessuna precauzione per eventi estremi come gli incendi. Il nostro progetto si trova nel centro storico di Atene e il nostro tentativo è stato di ridisegnare il luogo, secondo le esigenze delle strategie di protezione antincendio, sia nella parte urbana che naturale. I nostri punti di interesse focalizzati sono in primo luogo, un corridoio urbano di base della città e come possiamo gestire l'effetto dell'isola di calore urbana lì e in secondo luogo, la collina del Licabetto che è uno dei punti naturali più importanti all'interno della città. Nella seconda, il nostro design si concentra sulla prevenzione e il contrasto di un futuro incendio estivo. Il nostro “Firescapes” è un tentativo di cambiare il panorama di Atene reimpostando la questione dello spazio pubblico in una questione di cambiamento sociale e climatico.
