Hanoi cultural center

Hanoi is a progressive city with a strong cultural background. The city mixed with rich juxtaposition of local culture, French, socialist era and contemporary. These elements coexisted and led to the unique nuance of the city which drove the growth of its creative side. Despite the abundance of cultural talent, there is a lack of space to contain its demand. Previously, there was a kind of cultural center in the south of the city named creative city, but this space was poorly facilitated and burned down because of an electrical accident. The quest to build a cultural center started with defining the main function of the place. Through analyzing the existing cultural institutions in Hanoi, we concluded that the most needed space is the place for drama and experimental theater, artist creative space and exhibition area. The theme of contemporary theater becomes the main protagonist of the project, while the others become ancillary. In principle, the proposed theater should not outshine the current Hanoi Opera Hall. It should serve different types of performance and with a capacity less than 570 seats. After the theme of the project is defined, the establishment of location is the next step. The criteria of the location should be in the city center to be able to capture the complexity of the city’s culture and history. Thus, we found an area near the Long Bien bridge, red river, old quarter, and the new development of the city. This area is also planned to be developed in the future by the Government. The main approach that we used in designing this building is through analyzing Hanoi’ s culture that could be fit with the site condition and future trend. Then it is formulated into the design concept of “Linkage of Time”. This concept means, if Hanoi Cultural Center is able to become the bridge to the various needs and elements that are coming from the past, present, and future. The building hosts 2 different theaters which are separated by a courtyard in the middle of the building. The courtyard gives an opportunity to strengthen the connection between the city and the natural side of the site. In order to support more creative activity, the building supported with mediatheque area, library, dance class and exhibition area. All of this function then unified with one huge structure of the roof. The flytower of the theater area emerged through the roof to emphasis the importance of the theater and break the monotonous shape that could be.

Hanoi è una città progressista con un forte background culturale. La città si è mescolata con una ricca giustapposizione di cultura locale, francese, epoca socialista e contemporanea. Questi elementi sono coesistiti e hanno portato alla sfumatura unica della città che ha guidato la crescita del suo lato creativo. Nonostante l'abbondanza di talenti culturali, c'è una mancanza di spazio per contenere la sua domanda. In precedenza, c'era una sorta di centro culturale nel sud della città chiamato città creativa, ma questo spazio era mal facilitato e bruciato a causa di un incidente elettrico. La ricerca di costruire un centro culturale è iniziata con la definizione della funzione principale del luogo. Attraverso l'analisi delle istituzioni culturali esistenti ad Hanoi, abbiamo concluso che lo spazio più necessario è il luogo per il teatro drammatico e sperimentale, lo spazio creativo per gli artisti e l'area espositiva. Il tema del teatro contemporaneo diventa il protagonista principale del progetto, mentre gli altri diventano accessori. In linea di principio, il teatro proposto non dovrebbe eclissare l'attuale Hanoi Opera Hall. Dovrebbe servire diversi tipi di performance e con una capacità inferiore a 570 posti. Dopo che il tema del progetto è stato definito, l'istituzione dell'ubicazione è il passo successivo. Il criterio della posizione dovrebbe essere nel centro della città per essere in grado di catturare la complessità della cultura e della storia della città. Così, abbiamo trovato un'area vicino al ponte Long Bien, al fiume rosso, al vecchio quartiere e al nuovo sviluppo della città. Quest'area è anche pianificata per essere sviluppata in futuro dal governo. L'approccio principale che abbiamo usato nella progettazione di questo edificio è attraverso l'analisi della cultura di Hanoi che potrebbe essere adatta alla condizione del sito e alla tendenza futura. Poi è stato formulato nel concetto di design di "Linkage of Time". Questo concetto significa che se il Centro Culturale di Hanoi è in grado di diventare il ponte per i vari bisogni ed elementi che vengono dal passato, dal presente e dal futuro. L'edificio ospita 2 diversi teatri che sono separati da un cortile nel mezzo dell'edificio. Il cortile dà l'opportunità di rafforzare la connessione tra la città e il lato naturale del sito. Per sostenere un'attività più creativa, l'edificio è supportato da un'area mediateca, una biblioteca, una classe di danza e un'area espositiva. Tutte queste funzioni sono state poi unificate con un'unica enorme struttura del tetto. La flytower dell'area teatrale è emersa attraverso il tetto per enfatizzare l'importanza del teatro e rompere la forma monotona che potrebbe essere .
