Il mate come rappresentante delle possibilità brasiliane

Mate is a habit for millions of people in South America. This drink, an infusion made with the leaves of the native Ilex paraguariensis shrub, is rich in caffeine and has become a symbol of the region. Learnt from the indigenous Guarani people during the early ages of European colonization in the area, is has acquired a symbolic status to the societies of the River Plate basin. It is full of history, meaning and protocols. Brazil is the biggest producer of the mate leaves used in the infusion. Mate has been responsible for a significant economic cycle that has developed the area where it is naturally occuring. In a quest to understand the particularities of Brazil and Brazilian design as an effort to help the development of this country, mate stands out as an interesting subject of analysis that has not been duly examined. The purpose of this master thesis is to study mate consumption and design a product for it, taking into account its history and current place in Brazilian society.

Il mate è un’abitudine per milioni di persone in Sud America. Questa bevanda, un infuso a base di foglie dell’arbusto autoctono Ilex paraguariensis, è ricca di caffeina ed è diventata un simbolo della regione. Appreso dalle popolazioni indigene Guarani durante le prime età della colonizzazione europea nell’area, ha acquisito uno status simbolico per le società del bacino del Rio de la Plata. È pieno di storia, significato e protocolli. Il Brasile è il maggior produttore delle foglie di mate utilizzate nell’infuso. Il ate è stato responsabile di un significativo ciclo economico che ha sviluppato l’area in cui è presente naturalmente. Nel tentativo di comprendere le particolarità del Brasile e del design brasiliano come uno sforzo per aiutare lo sviluppo di questo paese, mate si distingue come un interessante argomento di analisi che non è stato debitamente esaminato. Lo scopo di questa tesi di laurea è studiare il consumo di mate e progettare un prodotto per esso, tenendo conto della sua storia e del posto attuale nella società brasiliana.
