The Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, is extremely relevant and increasingly important in manufacturing for a multitude of reasons as cost efficiency, operational agility, quality of products, data availability. As it is at an early stage, there is a lot of development required to reach technology maturity levels for mass implementation. With the competitive advantage Industry 4.0 technologies promise, they will be of growing importance for future manufacturing leaders. Industry 4.0 smart manufacturing technologies are divided into two groups: Information Technologies (IT) and Operational Technologies (OT). IT consists of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industrial Analytics, and Cloud Manufacturing, whereas OT includes Advanced Automation, Advanced Human Machine Interface (HMI), and Additive Manufacturing. Following the technological clusters of interest in detail or Industry 4.0 in general, this research paper is believed to help following stakeholders to know the trend and the evolution of Industry 4.0: first the manufacturing enterprises planning investments, to know what products and technologies will be available on the market in the near future, then the suppliers of Information and Operation Technology, to know what they have to develop, what startups are doing, and if they are possible competitors; this research is important also for researchers, to know what is interesting to study, as well as for workers and students, to know what skills they have to learn for better employability, and finally for institutions and government authorities, to define which companies and sectors to sustain. Available databases do not provide valuable comments on the collected datasets. Many conducted studies are limited in time or focus on a geographical area, or in a specific industry sector. These gaps make it challenging to understand and identify which are the most funded startups, which are the technological clusters where we find most startups, and which application is guiding the innovation. The thesis work is based on the dataset of startups founded no later than Jan 1, 2016, used to answer the question “Where the innovation is running?”. The innovation is running mainly in North America, but in near-future Asia could be a strong competitor due to its financial strength, IT and OT share the funding in a similar way, with three main clusters, Cloud Manufacturing, Industrial Analytics, and Additive Manufacturing, that seems to be the ones that most fulfill the needs of industry.
