Transformation of energy utilities towards a platform-based business model : challenges and strategies of implementation

Purpose, originality and value - The presented research work aims at fulfilling one major gap in the existing literature: the lack of knowledge regarding how incumbent firms within the energy sector implement platform-based business models, and the main challenges that they face during the process. The intention is to create a framework describing the most relevant hurdles that energy utilities face when adopting platform business models. Design, methodology and approach - The study followed a multi-step research process. Starting from the literature review, the relevant gaps were highlighted and a Preliminary Research Framework was built. Eventually, through an empirical analysis of the data collected through interviews with firms, the framework was tested and adjusted to obtain the Final Research Framework. Results and managerial implications - The final outcome is a comprehensive framework including the most relevant difficulties that companies should be aware of when implementing platform-based business models. Specifically, the influence that each of the identified challenges has on the existing business of the energy utilities, taking an internal perspective of the companies. Limits and future research - The cutting-edge nature of the topic limited the empirical evidence available for the analysis, and some of the interviewed companies did not have implemented yet any platform, but they are in an experimental phase. The environmental pressures and the subsequent required energy transition proved that the energy sector needs some structural changes. Therefore, future research is needed to deepen the addressed topic contributing to solve the gaps in the thesis.

Scopo, originalità e valore – Il presente lavoro di ricerca punta a colmare una principale lacuna nella letteratura esistente: la mancanza di conoscenza riguardo al come compagnie esistenti nel settore dell’energia implementano modelli basati su piattaforme, e le principali difficoltà che riscontrano. L’intenzione è di creare un framework che descriva gli ostacoli che le energy utilities affrontano durante l’adozione di questi modelli. Design, metodologia e approccio – Lo studio ha seguito un processo di ricerca a più fasi. Partendo dall’analisi della letteratura esistente, le principali lacune sono state evidenziate e un Framework di Ricerca Preliminare costruito. Infine, grazie a un’analisi empirica dei dati collezionati durante le interviste con le compagnie, il framework è stato testato e corretto per ottenere il Framework di Ricerca Finale. Risultati e implicazioni manageriali – Il risultato finale è un framework comprensivo delle difficoltà che le compagnie dovrebbero considerare durante l’implementazione di un modello a piattaforma. Nello specifico, qual è l’influenza che gli ostacoli individuati ha nel modello di business esistente delle energy utilities, assumendo una prospettiva interna delle compagnie. Limiti e ricerca futura – La natura avanguardistica dell’argomento ha limitato l’evidenza empirica disponibile per l’analisi, e alcune delle compagnie intervistate non hanno ancora implementato alcuna piattaforma, ma sono in fase sperimentale. Le pressioni ambientali e la conseguente transizione energetica richiesta provano il fatto che il settore dell’energia richieda cambiamenti strutturali. Di conseguenza, è richiesta ulteriore ricerca futura per approfondire l’argomento trattato contribuendo a colmare le lacune della presente ricerca.
