Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been revolutionizing the business world since the early years of the last decade. The expression IoT has grown from its first meaning, when Kevin Ashton invented it in 1999 to refer to RFId technologies, until today’s concept of network of smart devices. The field of IoT has evolved over the past years due to the convergence of a variety of technologies like Cellular Networks, Low Power Wide Area, NFC, and multiple others. The range of applications these technologies enables is so wide and various that it can go from people’s home to manufacturing plants, transforming the nature of everything with which enters in contact. Two of the many fields of application are Smart City and Smart Building. It is undeniable that the technology industry is known for being a fast-paced changing environment that is always evolving. At the same time, in today’s world is hard to talk about innovation without having to deal with startups. This duo of Startups and Smart City & Smart Building is exactly the focus of this thesis. The objective of the research is to depict the current state of art of these two sectors and the role this type of companies plays within it. This was possible thanks to the realization of a census of startups from which quantitative and qualitative data was gather. Multiple case studies are presented along the work aiming to better understand late trends and technologies within the market. Finally, a framework created ad hoc for the analysis is proposed with the intention of qualify the different startup’s approaches to the industry.
Le tecnologie Internet of Things (IoT) stanno rivoluzionando il mondo del business dai primi anni dello scorso decennio. L’espressione IoT si è evoluta dal suo primo significato, quando Kevin Ashton la usò nel 1999 per riferirsi alle tecnologie RFId, fino al concetto odierno di rete di dispositivi Smart. Il campo dell’IoT si è sviluppato nel corso degli ultimi anni grazie alla convergenza di una varietà di tecnologie quali Cellular Networks, Low Power Wide Area, NFC tra le altre. Il raggio di applicazione che queste tecnologie abilitano è così vasto e vario che può andare dalle case delle persone fino a impianti di produzione, trasformando la natura di tutto ciò con cui entra a contatto. Due dei molteplici campi di applicazione sono la Smart City e lo Smart Building. È innegabile che l’industria tecnologica sia nota per essere un ambiente in rapido cambiamento che si continua ad evolvere. Allo stesso tempo, nel mondo odierno è difficile parlare di innovazione senza aver a che fare con Startups. Questo binomio di Startups e Smart City & Smart Building sono proprio il focus di questa tesi. Lo scopo della ricerca è raffigurare l’attuale stato d’arte di questi due settori e il ruolo che questa tipologia di azienda gioca all’interno di esso. Questo è stato possibile grazie alla realizzazione di un censimento di startup dal quale dati quantitativi e qualitativi sono stati raccolti. Molteplici casi studio sono presentati durante il lavoro, mirando a permettere di comprendere meglio ultime tendenze e tecnologie all’interno del mercato. Infine, un framework creato ad hoc per questa analisi è proposto con l’intenzione di classificare i differenti approcci delle startup nei confronti dell’industria.
