The "vite maritata" as a landscape catalyst : the grapevine on living trellises

The married grapevine is part of those components of the Italian and Mediterranean agricultural landscape, typical of a society and a rural economy that is now past. In the text you it will be possible to reade the historical path of the married grapevine. Beginned in antiquity at the time of the Etruscans, it runs through the entire history of Europe, with phases of expansion and contraction, until it became progressively abandoned and definitively stopped in the 1960s. Subsequently, the main forms and expressions of this practice will be analyzed, which are very variegated while always remaining coherent in their own components of grapevine and living trellises. Indeed, there are marked regional and local differences in the expression of the grapevine-tree complex. The married grapevine is expressed in two different, but not opposed, forms: alberata and piantata. Although they are identical in their components, we will see how their volume is arranged in three-dimensional space in distinctly differentways. Finally, the agronomic, ecological and landscape potential of the married grapevine will be discussed, trying to demonstrate how this practice does not belong only to the past but also to the contemporary and future of the landscape. It will be seen how the characteristics of the married vine make it compatible with the contemporary need for multifunctionality and eco-sustainability of the landscape. How it can contribute to creating environments more suited to human, animal and plant well-being.

La vite maritata rientra in quelle componenti del paesaggio agrario italiano, e mediterraneo, tipiche di una società ed una economia rurale ormai passata. Nel testo, si vedrà il suo percorso storico, iniziato nell’antichità al tempo degli Etruschi e che attraversa l’intera storia europea, con fasi di espansione e contrazione, per poi declinare progressivamente ed interrompersi negli anni Sessanta del Novecento. Successivamente, saranno analizzate le principali forme ed espressioni di questa pratica, le quali sono molto variegate pur rimanendo sempre coerenti nelle proprie componenti di vite e tutore. Esistono infatti, marcate differenze regionali e locali nella espressione del complesso vite-tutore. La vite maritata è espressa in due forme differenti, ma non contrapposte: alberata e piantata. Pur essendo identiche nei componenti, si vedrà come si dispongono nello spazio tridimensionale in volumi nettamente differenti. Infine, saranno discusse le potenzialità agronomiche, ecologiche e paesaggistiche della vite maritata nella contemporaneità, provando a dimostrare come questa non appartenga solo al passato ma anche alla contemporaneità e al futuro del paesaggio. Si vedrà, come le caratteristiche della vite maritata la rendano compatibile con l’esigenza contemporanea di multifunzionalità ed ecosostenibilità del paesaggio. Di come essa possa contribuire a creare ambienti più adatti al benessere umano, animale e vegetale.
