Kulturhaus. Cultural center in Düsseldorf designed through the approach and operative methodology of Renzo Piano building workshop

The thesis project stems from the request for a theoretical and operative elaboration, based on the design methodology and poetics manifested by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, for the formulation of a building intervention in the city of Düsseldorf. This intervention regards the extension and completion of The Float Building (by RPBW) located in the port area of the city: the Hafen. The requested urban graft will requalify an area of 4000 m2, currently used as a parking lot characterized by the overlook on its south side with The Float Building and in the center of an urban context in continuous transformation. The proposed theme wants to be an opportunity to learn and apply a specific poetic and operative methodology of urban grafting and building construction in order to redevelop the project area and involve it within the urban environment and its social mix. The process therefore starts from a specific input: “Designing recreational and auditorial spaces that support the office complex in front, which is currently lacking”. “Kulturhaus” is the theoretical and operative response to this input. This project consists of designing a cultural center with a total built area of 2800 m2 circa, that includes an auditorium, rentable spaces for co-working and meetings, free-layout exhibition spaces and a cafeteria. The design also involves the redevelopment of the whole area with an urban garden with anti-smog planting, a green and recreational place for the surrounding area. The collaboration with the RPBW studio has produced an intense work of research and technical-operative design process that goes from the volumetric study and its relationship with the context till the ad-hoc design of some technological and constructive elements. This paper aims to be an investigative and designing report of a precise method and approach, revealing the steps of a process that involves analytical, interpretative, design and representative phases.

Il progetto di tesi nasce dalla richiesta di un’elaborazione teorica e operativa, basata sulla metodologia progettuale e sulla poetica descritta e manifestata dallo studio Renzo Piano Building Workshop per la formulazione di un intervento costruttivo nella città di Düsseldorf.Questo intervento riguarda l’ampliamento e il completamento del The Float Building (by RPBW) situato nella zona portuale della città: Hafen. L’innesto urbano richiesto andrà a riqualificare un’area di 4000 m2, attualmente utilizzata come parcheggio caratterizzata dall’affaccio nel suo lato sud con The Float Building e al centro di un contesto urbano in continua trasformazione. Il tema proposto vuole essere un’occasione per apprendere e applicare una specifica metodologia operativa di innesto urbano e di costruzione edilizia, al fine di riqualificare l’area di progetto e coinvolgerla all’interno del tessuto urbano e del mix sociale che lo caratterizza. Il processo inizia quindi con un input specifico: “Progettare spazi ricreativi e auditoriali che supportino il complesso di uffici antistante, attualmente sprovvisto”. “Kulturhaus” è la risposta teorica e operativa a questo input. Consiste in un centro culturale con una superficie totale costruita di circa 2800 m2, che ospita un auditorium, spazi affittabili per co-working e riunioni, spazi espositivi caratterizzati da un free-layout e una caffetteria. La progettazione coinvolge anche un giardino urbano con piantumazione anti-smog, un luogo verde e ricreativo per l’area circostante. La collaborazione con lo studio RPBW ha prodotto un intenso lavoro di ricerca e di progettazione tecnico-operativa che va dallo studio volumetrico e il suo rapporto con il contesto fino alla progettazione ad-hoc di alcuni elementi tecnologici e costruttivi. Questo elaborato ambisce ad essere un report investigativo e progettuale di un preciso metodo e approccio, svelando i passaggi di un processo che coinvolge fasi analitiche, interpretative, progettuali e grafico rappresentative.
