Memorial park of the Covid-19 pandemic. A memorial park and urban space regeneration in the post-pandemic era in Wuhan, the centre of the Covid-19 pandemic

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic at the end of 2019 has left many families heartbroken and the impact of this global pandemic is, as what we are all witnessing, chronic. The idea of a memorial park for the Covid-19 pandemic in the post-pandemic era came out with this background. This project aims on the topic of post-pandemic memorial architecture and landscape space as the pandemic is undoubtedly a historical event and it is supposed to be a re-minder to our human race. We believe that all human beings are emotionally connected in this globalisation world, so the elements and forms that trigger memories and thoughts should be valued. An example of the memorial element is the Buddhist ribbon, which renders the visualisation of in-visible wind through the visible objects, as the blowing wind flips the ribbon, the invisible and ephemeral breezes are presented as something physical and tangible, this is a ritual to remember the dead in Buddhism. These distinctive religious symbols and regional culture are closely linked to the concepts of life and death. Wuhan, the very first centre of the Covid-19 pandemic in the year of 2019, is chosen as the site of this memorial park. Specially, the site plot of this project is exactly the South China Seafood Market, the core of the centre of the epidemic in Wuhan. This area keeps closed after the pandemic, and becomes a name which the local people refuse to talk about, a place which people tend to not think of, a sorrow memory which is deliberately sunk into oblivion. However, this place shall not be hidden and this memory, although still soaked with sadness, shall not be forgotten. It cannot be denied that, as young landscape architects of this generation, also as Chinese citizens, it is our responsibility to help rebuild our cities after the pandemic. We believe that a well- designed memorial space per se is a good narrator that makes people understand all the efforts and sacrifices. The history remains in the past and our human civilization shall continue. In our cities, the spaces for condolences and reflection will be needed in the post-pandemic era.

Lo scoppio della pandemia di Covid-19 alla fine del 2019 ha lasciato molte famiglie con il cuore spezzato e l'impatto di questa pandemia globale è, come quello a cui tutti stiamo assistendo, cronico. L'idea di un parco commemorativo per la pandemia di Covid-19 nell'era post-pandemia è venuta fuori con questo sfondo. Questo progetto mira al tema del paesaggio commemorativo post-pandemia e dello spazio paesaggistico, in quanto la pandemia è senza dubbio un evento storico e dovrebbe essere un re-minder per tutte le persone. Crediamo che tutti gli esseri umani siano emotivamente connessi in questo mondo di globalizzazione, quindi gli elementi e le forme che innescano ricordi e pensieri dovrebbero essere valutati. Un esempio dell'elemento commemorativo è il nastro buddista, che rende la visualizzazione del vento invisibile attraverso gli oggetti visibili, mentre il vento che soffia capovolge il nastro, le brezze invisibili ed effimere sono presentate come qualcosa di fisico e tangibile, questo è un rituale per ricordare i morti nel buddismo. Questi simboli religiosi distintivi e la cultura regionale sono strettamente legati ai concetti di vita e di morte. Wuhan, il primo centro della pandemia di Covid-19 nell'anno 2019, viene scelto come sito di questo parco commemorativo. In particolare, la trama del sito di questo progetto è esattamente il mercato del pesce della Cina meridionale, il nucleo del centro dell'epidemia a Wuhan. Questa zona rimane chiusa dopo la pandemia e diventa qualcosa di cui la popolazione locale si rifiuta di parlare, un luogo a cui la gente tende a non pensare, un ricordo doloroso che è deliberatamente sprofondato nell'oblio. Tuttavia, questo luogo non sarà nascosto e questo ricordo, sebbene ancora intriso di tristezza, non sarà dimenticato. Non si può negare che, come giovani architetti paesaggisti di questa generazione, anche come cittadini cinesi, è nostra responsabilità aiutare a ricostruire le nostre città dopo la pandemia. Crediamo che uno spazio commemorativo ben progettato sia uno strumento utile che fa capire alle persone tutti gli sforzi e i sacrifici fatti. La storia rimane nel passato e la civiltà proseguirà. Nelle nostre città, gli spazi per le condoglianze e la riflessione saranno necessari nell'era post-pandemia.
