Abstract
Suburbs and satellite towns are rapidly and uncontrollably expanding. It has a variety of consequences for regional systems in and around major cities, including commuting, urban sprawl, and environmental impacts. Furthermore, as the Covid epidemic spread, social and geographical challenges for agglomerations have became more apparent. Changes in living and working trend contribute to growth of outer city without proper urban planning. The study major goal is to examine outer city challenges and opportunities, from global to local perspective. The research aims to examine how outer city areas can be transformed to more independent neighbourhoods by creating “local urbanity”. Therefore it focuses on how to improve livability and build local identity by reuse and adaptation of existing public spaces, buildings and infrastructure. The first part of the Thesis examines the global context of urban expansion and forms of urbanization based on international literature, introducing the concept of the "Outer City". It also introduces a Guidebook of best practices in urban design for suburban neighbourhoods and planetary towns based on case studies. The objective of latter part of research is to test and adapt identified solutions to local constraints of three satelite neighbourhoods of Warsaw making a strategic pattern of design implementation. The purpose of the intervention is to proove that this strategic approach with the use of simple design tools for retrofitting is universal and can be easily adapted for different locations. As a result of this study, a better understanding of outer city is developed along with a pattern for retrofitting intervention, including identification of local issues, setting up a strategy and applying appriopriate urban design solutions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
