Abstract
Blockchain technology can be defined as a distributed database which is able to manage non-trusting individuals’ interactions without the need of intermediaries. The potential shift of paradigm that this imply for existing commercial, financial, and social relationships is promising to revolutionize several industries, and it is generating enormous interest in the academic community and beyond. Despite Blockchain being around for more than ten years, though, examples of successful implementations remain extremely rare. This is due to the inability of research and practice to fully understand the impact that the technology could have at a business model level. This dissertation is based on that very acknowledgment, and it aims at bonding a scientific literature on the topic which is fragmented and heterogeneous. Starting from existing studies, a comprehensive business model taxonomy of 887 Blockchain startups was produced. The methodology followed consists, at first, in a descriptive analysis of Crunchbase Blockchain ventures, and then, in an empirical refinement of the results of those observations through specific case studies interviews. The main benefit provided by this dissertation is that one of bridging the gap that exists in the literature between theoretical and practical implementations of the technology. Suggestions of future research regard, instead, the validation or expansion of this thesis outcome according to upcoming years Blockchain business models features.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
