Yazd is a city located in the desert in the center of Iran. Boasting three thousand years of history, Yazd has undergone constant changes in its urban composition. Focusing on the 20th century, significant historical events have influenced the city, but especially its morphology. The White and then the Islamic Revolutions had strong effect of parceling out agricultural lands, as opposed to the traditional semi-feudal management organizations; the introduction of suburbanization allowed the creation of a diffuse city, in which it is possible to observe an increase in the built-up area as well as in the land used for production; the war against Iraq resulted in the destruction of a large number of urban fabrics of the Persian cities, hence there were critical moments of partial reconstruction of such cities’ tissues. Looking back over the history of the relationship between agriculture-architecture and agriculture-city, we can recognize a mutation due to the advent of industrialization and the expansion of cities. This mutation has been the urge for proposing new models of cities and putting forward new ideas for re-appropriation of the architecture and city relationships with agriculture and nature. The aim of this thesis is to reflect on such a relationship and its mutation in Yazd in order to re-compose an architecture and urban project in the context of the UNESCO buffer zone of the Persian garden of Dolat Abad (a UNESCO heritage site), in relationship with an agricultural area that has survived the suburbanization, and the contemporary sprawl. The project proposes a neighborhood in which housing and rural reality are in close contact, creating a local micro-dimension that not only gives quality to the area surrounding the garden, but establishes a new balance between suburban and rural fragments.

Abstract
The project proposes a neighborhood in which housing and rural reality are in close contact, creating a local micro-dimension that not only gives quality to the area surrounding the garden, but establishes a new balance between suburban and rural fragments.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
