Abstract
During the post-war reconstruction period, a new complex was built for the reconstruction of Società Umanitaria, which was a pile of rubble. Light machinery building is a modern institute building designed by Giovanni Romano, placed in the revival project of Società Umanitaria, one of the most typical and progressive social institutions connected with the modernization history of Italy. Today, the building does not cater to the user’s needs efficiently and is used for many different functions apart from its original purpose. With the project in this thesis, design solutions were produced to meet the modern needs while fulfilling the old spirit to ensure the revival of this building by preserving its main character and structure. In addition, design solutions are presented to address problems related to the building within the complex and to ensure a good relationship with the surroundings In the transformation project of Light machinery building in this thesis, three main issues were addressed: - Bringing the building back to its original function by meeting today’s needs and increasing the quality of the spaces - Conservation of the building while preserving its modern and original character, and repairing the parts that are not in good condition - To transform the building into a binding element within the complex by improving its relations with its surroundings. A new vertical circulation design is proposed in addition to the existing ones. Two new passages were designed on the ground floor, providing greater permeability. Thus, providing effective entrances while at the same time reducing the blocking effect of the building and reinforcing the connection between the different structures in the complex. The function of the building is designed as an art school with reference to its original function and made open to users of all ages. restoration and conservation methods have been determined for the characteristic facades of the building, and innovations have been carried out in some parts of the facade in order to provide further visibility.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
