Studies in the field of family firms are currently giving growing conceptual and empirical attention to the relevance of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Open Innovation as key drivers for family firms’ performance and survival. In parallel, the concept of Socio-Emotional Wealth (SEW) is giving rise to a leading homegrown theory to study family firms to explain how entrepreneurship and innovation enfold in unique ways in family firm contexts. Nonetheless, limited attention has been given so far to the simultaneous interplay of SEW with Entrepreneurial Orientation and Open Innovation in driving family firms performance. Specifically, to date, no study investigates how these factors interact and jointly affect performance. In this study, we explore and compare two alternative conceptual logics that might govern the interplay between SEW, Entrepreneurial Orientation and Open Innovation: (1) a contingency model substantiated in moderation effects, and (2) a causal chain model turning attention to mediated effects. Operationally, the study conducts a quantitative comparison of moderation and mediation statistical analysis through OLS. Findings are based on primary data collected from 132 Italian firms. The results reveal a significant simultaneous interplay of SEW, Entrepreneurial Orientation and Open Innovation in driving family firms performance. However, when a great emphasis is given to psychological, social and emotional factors, results show that both moderation and mediation models loose predictive power.

Abstract
However, when a great emphasis is given to psychological, social and emotional factors, results show that both moderation and mediation models loose predictive power.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
