Revalueing Tergeste. A new purpose for the urban archaeologies of the roman theater of Trieste

Urban ruins still play a very complex role in our cities, a role that increasingly requires a redefinition that takes into account all the elements of their history as well as the different degrees of value of these archaeologies. The starting point of the Thesis is therefore to question what is the meaning of an urban ruin, at the time when it depletes its role as a symbol and monument, to become instead a silent and inexpressive object in the city. Within this debate, the Thesis chooses to focus on the Roman Theater of Trieste, considered a particularly relevant case of analysis in this regard. Through a thorough analysis of the history of Trieste and the Roman theater and an in-depth study of the very elements that compose the theater, the thesis aims to lay the groundwork for a design proposal that is aware and attentive to all the problems and historical values that the place holds. Starting from the complex history that has affected the re-exhumation of the theater, the project aims to make it a genuine urban phenomenon for the city of Trieste and its citizens, creating at the same time a space to live in its awareness and not with a distracted and passive observation, returning to the theater the importance and the values that it assumed in the Roman city, for an effective revaluation of Tergeste and its traces. The final objective of the thesis is to leave a suggestion, an invite to consider the project of reactivation of the theater as a part of a larger story, which points to the enhancement of the city through an active revaluation of their testimonies, bringing into play the strong potential that urban archaeologies hold.

Le rovine urbane assumono all’interno delle nostre città un ruolo ancora molto complesso, che necessita sempre di più di una ridefinizione che tenga conto di tutti gli elementi della loro storia e dei diversi gradi di valore di queste archeologie. L’obiettivo di partenza della tesi è quindi quello di andare ad interrogarsi su quale sia il senso di una rovina urbana nel momento in cui essa va ad esaurire il suo ruolo di simbolo e monumento, per diventare al contrario un oggetto muto ed inespressivo nella città. All’interno di questo dibattito, la tesi sceglie di focalizzarsi sul Teatro romano di Trieste, ritenuto un caso di analisi particolarmente rilevante in tal senso. Attraverso un’approfondita analisi della storia di Trieste e del teatro romano e un approfondimento sugli elementi stessi che compongono il teatro, la tesi si propone di porre le basi per una proposta progettuale che sia consapevole e attenta a tutti i problemi e i valori storici che il luogo tiene in gioco. Partendo dalla complessa storia che ha interessato la riesumazione del teatro, il progetto mira a rendere esso un vero e proprio fatto urbano per la città di Trieste e i suoi cittadini, creando allo stesso tempo uno spazio da vivere nella sua consapevolezza e non con un’osservazione distratta e passiva, andando a restituire al Teatro l’importanza e i valori che esso assumeva nella città romana, per un’effettiva rivalorizzazione di Tergeste e delle sue tracce. Obiettivo conclusivo della tesi è lasciare una suggestione, un invito al considerare il progetto di riattivazione del teatro come tessera di un progetto più ampio, che punti alla valorizzazione delle città attraverso una rivalorizzazione attiva delle loro testimonianze, mettendo in gioco il forte potenziale che le archeologie urbane hanno.
