The Ffctitious city

The Fictitious City is conceived from a space that introspects the future of cities and what Urbanism holds for our Post-Anthropocene future. Considering the events of the Anthropocene epoch and its plausible repercussions, the project allows us to navigate through the ‘fictitious’, a hyperreality; allowing the reader to speculate along the fringe between the real and virtual. It argues the relevance of interaction with the reader allowing them to self-reflect upon the choices made in the process of deliberation over speculative futures, which forms the crux of the project. Year: 2150 Location: 40°45’29.8”N 73°57’14.1”W City: A survival habitat in a state of flux that must constantly adapt to environmental and climatic fluctuations and in in a constant state of metamorphosis. Times have changed. The city is no longer a conventional composition of buildings and streets. What once seemed to be distinguished as New York or Tokyo no longer exists. Conversations on the impact of human interventions on the natural ecosystem spiralled into nothingness when human priorities challenged the balance of the ecosystem. People back then forgot that the city was only a part of a larger multiverse set up by the balances of nature. When the city challenged this natural balance, and the so-called Anthropocene phased out to pave way for bigger events, the city we once knew of collapsed and transformed into a survival habitat rooting on resilience which it must at one point in time have resonated with. The fictitious city is an ephemeral habitat, a temporal mould of a hybrid city that is defined by the fiction weaved by speculative intuitions. It is in a sense a fragment of our imagination, a realm that transforms as defined by a series of design iterations defined by the project narrative driven by research. The fictitious city simply personifies resilience in geographies of risk wherein it must adapt to a myriad of ecological shifts and dynamics within the ecosystem. The project that follows a reverse-chronological narrative asks a critical question; ‘what choices are we willing to make for the future? The project narrative aims to conceptualise and articulate the Fictitious-adaptive city as it must respond to changing environmental and climatic conditions. The project places its emphasis on parameter based provisional or conditional design that allows for an imaginary narrative to amplify productive instabilities while inventing new types of urban and landscape forms and typologies. The project is deliberately experimental and research-oriented, focusing on the development of a systemic approach. The Systemic approach encourages experimentation and dynamic testing thus establishing a prototype that may be tested in various geographies of risk. It is in the innate nature of cities to adapt to constant change through time and its resiliency towards the same. Working with such distinct conflicting tendencies set in the premise of Post-Anthropocene, the thesis aims to be a prod at the sense of design and the choices we make for the future. The thesis inadvertently investigates the credibility and potential of the speculative social imaginary, a critical construct to adapt to the unprecedented future.

The Fictitious City è concepito a partire da uno spazio di introspezione sul futuro delle città e su ciò che l'urbanistica riserva al nostro futuro post-antropocene. Considerando gli eventi dell'epoca dell'Antropocene e le sue plausibili ripercussioni, il progetto ci permette di navigare attraverso il 'fittizio', una iperrealtà; permettendo al lettore di speculare lungo la frangia tra il reale e il virtuale. Sostiene l'importanza dell'interazione con il lettore che gli permette di auto-riflettere sulle scelte fatte nel processo di deliberazione sui futuri speculativi, che costituisce il punto cruciale del progetto. I tempi sono cambiati. La città non è più una composizione convenzionale di edifici e strade. Ciò che una volta sembrava distinguersi come New York o Tokyo non esiste più. Le conversazioni sull'impatto degli interventi umani sull'ecosistema naturale sono cadute nel nulla quando le priorità umane hanno sfidato l'equilibrio dell'ecosistema. La gente allora dimenticava che la città era solo una parte di un multiverso più grande creato dagli equilibri della natura. Quando la città ha sfidato questo equilibrio naturale, e il cosiddetto Antropocene si è ritirato per aprire la strada a eventi più grandi, la città che conoscevamo una volta è crollata e si è trasformata in un habitat di sopravvivenza radicato sulla resilienza con cui deve aver avuto un momento di risonanza. La città fittizia è un habitat effimero, uno stampo temporale di una città ibrida che è definita dalla finzione tessuta da intuizioni speculative. È in un certo senso un frammento della nostra immaginazione, un regno che si trasforma come definito da una serie di iterazioni progettuali definite dalla narrazione del progetto guidata dalla ricerca. La città fittizia personifica semplicemente la resilienza nelle geografie del rischio in cui deve adattarsi a una miriade di spostamenti ecologici e dinamiche all'interno dell'ecosistema. Il progetto che segue una narrazione cronologica inversa pone una domanda critica: "quali scelte siamo disposti a fare per il futuro? La narrazione del progetto mira a concettualizzare e articolare la città fittizia-adattiva che deve rispondere alle mutevoli condizioni ambientali e climatiche. Il progetto pone la sua enfasi sul design provvisorio o condizionale basato su parametri che permette a una narrazione immaginaria di amplificare le instabilità produttive mentre inventa nuovi tipi di forme e tipologie urbane e paesaggistiche. Il progetto è deliberatamente sperimentale e orientato alla ricerca, concentrandosi sullo sviluppo di un approccio sistemico. L'approccio sistemico incoraggia la sperimentazione e il test dinamico, stabilendo così un prototipo che può essere testato in varie geografie di rischio. È nella natura innata delle città adattarsi al cambiamento costante nel tempo e alla sua resilienza verso lo stesso. Lavorando con queste distinte tendenze conflittuali, poste nella premessa del Post-Antropocene, la tesi vuole essere un pungolo al senso del design e alle scelte che facciamo per il futuro. La tesi indaga inavvertitamente la credibilità e il potenziale dell'immaginario sociale speculativo, un costrutto critico per adattarsi al futuro senza precedenti.
