Re-defining the marine. A landscape project for the Marine of Lecce, aimed at reimplementing and safeguarding the natural coastal ecosystems and focusing on the promotion of sustainable tourism and local development. Concurrently creating a new identity of places through selective demolitions and reuse of waste materials

The Marine of Lecce have experienced a sudden rise as prominent seaside town since the 1950s. During the summer, large crowds of sea-loving tourists arrive here from neighbouring towns as well as from other parts of Italy and Europe. However, the anthropisation that has affected the coast has seen the unauthorised construction of second homes, bathing establishments and infrastructures that, to a significant extent, only catered to tourist needs, without having any consideration for the surrounding environment. This conflict of existence between the built and the unbuilt, the natural and the artificial, between the abandoned and upsurge, has attracted our interest to this fascinating landscape. With our thesis we want to explore the complexity of the Marine of Lecce, Torre Rinalda, Spiaggiabella and Torre Chianca, considering both the natural environment rich in unexpressed potential, which has been altered and muzzled by the expansion of the urban fabric and the problems of the illegal built environment which is a place of contradictions, in a state of semi-abandonment for many months of the year and that lacks primary urbanisation works and services for both tourists and citizens. Our objective to "redefine" the Marine, therefore, starts from the investigation of the existing conditions and problems, proposes the selective demolition of the unauthorised buildings, and the re-use of the demolition materials in the landscape project aimed at the naturalistic restoration of the dune systems and wetlands present in the project area. For this reason, parallel to the design approach, we carried out research that provides guidelines and case studies on how to deal with these two aspects. The project seeks to address and solve the problems of the place and is conceived as a long-term proposal to revive the coastal landscape, so that it can be experienced in every season and can attract young people and tourists by enhancing the existing potential and creating new activities and relationships. At the same time it seeks to create a new balance between nature and the built environment, and in this way to give a new identity to the Marine.

Le Marine di Lecce hanno vissuto un'improvvisa ascesa alla ribalta come città balneari a partire dagli anni 50. Durante l'estate, grandi folle di turisti arrivano qui dalle città limitrofe della Puglia come da altre parti d'Italia e d'Europa attirate dalla bellezza del mare del Salento. Tuttavia, l'antropizzazione che ha interessato la costa ha visto la costruzione abusiva di seconde case, stabilimenti balneari ed infrastrutture che, in misura significativa, rispondevano solo alle esigenze turistiche, senza avere alcuna considerazione all'ambiente circostante. Questo conflitto tra costruito e non costruito, naturale e artificiale, tra abbandono e ribalta, ha attirato il nostro interesse verso questo affascinante paesaggio. Con la nostra tesi vogliamo esplorare la complessità delle Marine di Lecce, Torre Rinalda, Spiaggiabella e Torre Chianca, considerando, da un lato, l' ambiente naturale ricco di potenzialità inespresse, che è stato alterato, finanche soppresso, dall' espandersi del tessuto urbano, dall'altro vogliamo affrontare il problema del costruito, il quale, nato illegalmente, è in sè luogo di contraddizioni , essendo in stato di semi-abbandono per molti mesi dell'anno e mancando opere di urbanizzazione primaria e servizi sia per i turisti che per i cittadini. Il nostro obiettivo di "ridefinire" le Marine, quindi, partendo dall'analisi delle condizioni e dei problemi esistenti, propone la demolizione selettiva dell'edificato abusivo e il riuso dei materiali di demolizione nel progetto di paesaggio volto al ripristino naturalistico dei sistemi dunali e delle aree umide presenti nell'area di progetto. Per questo, di supporto al progetto, abbiamo portato avanti anche una parte di ricerca che ci fornisse linee guida e casi studio per affrontare le due tematiche. Il progetto cerca di "risolvere" le problematiche del luogo ed è concepito come una proposta a lungo termine per far "rivivere" la costa leccese, in modo che possa essere vissuta in ogni stagione e possa attrarre giovani e turisti, implementando le esistenti potenzialità e creando nuove attività e relazioni. Allo stesso tempo cerca di creare un nuovo equilibro tra naturalità ed ambiente costruito, e in questo modo di dare una nuova identità alle Marine.
