This thesis investigates the contribution of new technologies in enhancing the sustainability of the fashion sector, with particular focus on additive manufacturing processes, also known as 3D printing. In the first part, the concept of sustainability and its relevance in the fashion system are defined and the greatest environmental impacts of the textile value chain are identified. Then, a selection of new technologies and their impact on the sustainability of fashion products is presented, also through numerous case studies. The second part focuses on the application of additive manufacturing techniques in the field of fashion and on the ways in which this technology can be considered sustainable. The third part presents an observation and classification of 3D fabrics that have particular geometries that can give the printed object a flexibility and softness that makes it suitable for the production of clothing. This research is concretized in the realization of the 3XO project, a capsule collection of wearable accessories produced with 3D printing. These products minimize the consumption of material and are recyclable, therefore they demonstrate the possibility of inserting additive manufacturing in a context of circular economy. Furthermore, auxetic structures are exploited to give the garments comfort and flexibility, resulting in products with an aesthetic, functional and potentially commercial value.
Questa tesi indaga il contributo delle nuove tecnologie al miglioramento della sostenibilità del settore moda, con una particolare attenzione ai processi di manifattura additiva, anche conosciuta come stampa 3D. In una prima parte, viene definito il concetto di sostenibilità e la sua rilevanza nel sistema moda e vengono identificati i punti di maggiore impatto ambientale della filiera del tessile. Successivamente, è presentata una selezione di nuove tecnologie e il loro impatto sulla sostenibilità dei prodotti moda, anche tramite numerosi case study. La seconda parte si concentra sull’applicazione delle tecniche di manifattura additiva nel campo della moda e sui modi in cui questa può essere considerata sostenibile. La terza parte presenta una osservazione e classificazione di tessuti 3D, ossia particolari geometrie che possono conferire all’oggetto stampato una flessibilità e morbidezza che lo rende adeguato alla produzione di capi di abbigliamento. Questa ricerca viene concretizzata nella realizzazione del progetto 3XO, una capsule collection di accessori indossabili prodotti con la stampa 3D. Questi prodotti minimizzano il consumo di materiale e sono riciclabili, quindi dimostrano la possibilità di inserire la manifattura additiva in un contesto di economia circolare. Inoltre, vengono sfruttate le strutture auxetiche per conferire ai capi comfort e flessibilità, risultando in prodotti dal valore estetico, funzionale e potenzialmente commerciale.
