Sustainable design in 21st century : how design for sustainable development came to "be" from Papanek's book "Design for the real world" to 2022

In the current context of technological progress and digital transformation, design for sustainable development, or more generally strategic design, has come under the spotlight since environmental issues and the protection of our ecosystem have become global priorities. This theme is certainly not new to design, but rather, since the beginning of the century, design as a discipline has changed a great deal and its boundaries have been expanded in part to address the complexity of the issues we are facing. The attention of designers is, therefore, aimed at structuring a design process consisting of methods and tools that can help them to propose and realise “green” product-services, but, at the same time, make the consumer more aware and responsible. However, this important task and responsibility entrusted to design does not yet have a clear resolution, a well-defined way of acting, so that, nowadays, it is still difficult to answer the question: how can designers today contribute to sustainable development? Which tools and methods are fundamental for a design aiming at social innovation and sustainability? To this end (in order to take a step forward in the academic investigation of the topic), the thesis aims to identify and organise within the design flow the essential methods and tools that provide support during the design process and identify the phases in which they become useful, evaluating, if necessary, some possible integrations. In order to achieve this objective, the research was based on reading and analysing the 1972 book “Design for the real world” by Victor Papanek, who was the first to have a revolutionary and anticipatory vision on this topic. Then, through a historical excursus, we tried to report all the most remarkable stages, transformations and evolutions that firstly design and nowadays design thinking have made in the social and environmental field, through the work of different designers. Finally, the thesis makes a first attempt to understand how the various methods and tools are integrated and adopted, proposing its own organisation within the design process. This will be presented in a more discursive and theoretical way within this thesis, with the help of graphic visualisations, but also in a more explicable and tangible way through a website, the final output of the thesis. To show the features of the various methods and tools and how they provide support during the design process and identify the phase of the design flow in which they become useful, evaluating, if necessary, some possible integrations.

Nell’attuale contesto di progresso tecnologico e trasformazione digitale, il design per lo sviluppo sostenibile, o più in generale il design strategico, è finito sotto i riflettori da quando la questione ambientale e la salvaguardia del nostro ecosistema sono diventate priorità a livello mondiale. Questo tema non è di certo nuovo al design ma, anzi, dall’inizio del secolo il design come disciplina è cambiato molto e i suoi confini sono stati ampliati in parte anche per affrontare la complessità dei problemi che stiamo affrontando. L’attenzione dei designers è, quindi, volta a strutturare un processo progettuale costituito da metodi e strumenti in grado di aiutarli nel proporre e realizzare prodotti-servizi “verdi”, ma, allo stesso tempo, rendere il consumatore più consapevole e responsabile. Tuttavia, questo importante compito e responsabilità affidata al design non ha ancora una risoluzione chiara, un modo di agire ben definito, tanto che, al giorno d’oggi, è ancora difficile rispondere alla domanda: qual è il ruolo del designer oggi riguardo uno sviluppo sostenibile? Quali strumenti e metodi sono fondamentali per una progettazione che mira all’innovazione sociale e alla sostenibilità? A tal fine(Al fine di fare un passo avanti nell’indagine accademica dell’argomento), la tesi mira ad identificare ed organizzare all’interno del processo/flusso progettuale i metodi e gli strumenti indispensabili che forniscono supporto durante il processo di progettazione e individuare le fasi all’interno di esso in cui diventano utili, valutando, se necessario, alcune possibili integrazioni. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, alla base della ricerca vi è stata la lettura e l’analisi del libro “Design for the real world” del 1972 di Victor Papanek, che per primo ha avuto una visione rivoluzionaria ed anticipatoria riguardo questo topic. Quindi, attraverso un excursus storico si è cercato di riportare tutte le tappe e le evoluzioni più significative che il design prima e il design thinking oggi ha compiuto, in ambito sociale e ambientale, attraverso il lavoro di diversi designers Infine, la tesi fa un primo tentativo per capire come i vari metodi e strumenti siano integrati e adottati, proponendo una propria organizzazione di questi all’interno del processo progettuale. Tutto ciò verrà presentato in maniera discorsiva e teorica all’interno di questa tesi, con l’aiuto di visualizzazioni grafiche ma, anche, in maniera più esplicita e tangibile attraverso un website, output finale della tesi. Per mostrare le caratteristiche dei vari metodi e strumenti e come questi forniscono supporto durante il processo di progettazione e identificare la fase del flusso di progettazione in cui diventano utili, valutando, se necessario, alcune possibili integrazioni.
