Coro. Triggering intergenerational social connection through music at Casa Verdi

Sound-driven approach can and has been interpreted with many different meanings within a variety of projects within the field of interaction design, over the last few decades. From an open research process into the broad spectrum of this subject, I have collected important insights on the directions of cross-modal and accessible interaction, participatory performances, the role of technology mediation in the audience, and the specific attributes of the role of sound in affecting and sparking emotions in users. The sound dimension has in fact been channelled through contexts and experiences as a vehicle for active participation towards the emancipation of the users. Music is a unique resource in promoting social encounters, and in propelling relationships among participants and with the system. However, the creation of a meaningful experience based on this potential has often stalled in the attempt to satisfy users with variable training on the subject. Differences in previous musical knowledge are nullified in the Milanese context of the Casa Verdi institution, founded by Giuseppe Verdi to allow retired performers to maintain their dignity and music-drenched lifestyle among colleagues, inhabiting a cultural and lively old-age care facility. The restrictions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic, however, have strongly limited the balance of activities and relationships of Guests among each other and externally. The issue of poor social connection is tackled in the project by the design of an interactive system based on musical professionalism, which allows old-age Guests to re-live their memories and career emotions by exchanging advice and personal experience with young students who are hosted in a separate building of the institution. After an attentive formulation and validation of a first-draft concept based on the insights collected, the double-sided system is prototyped through digital touchpoints for students and elders, whose interface is mediated by the activity coordinator during a routine laboratory, integrating the interaction into a communication habit. The prototype is tested and evaluated in its usability and emotional influence, and lastly some conclusions are drawn on the accomplished goals of the challenge, the deficiencies of the process, and the improvements and potential expansions for future developments of the project.

L’approccio basato sul suono nella branca di design dell’interazione lascia spazio a numerosi significati, che nel corso degli ultimi decenni sono stati interpretati su una larga scala di progetti. Svolgendo un processo di ricerca attraverso il vasto spettro di questa materia, ho raccolto informazioni rilevanti nel campo dell’interazione intermodale ed accessibile, delle performance partecipative, del ruolo della mediazione tecnologica verso il pubblico, e degli attributi specifici del ruolo proprio del suono nel suscitare emozioni negli utenti. La dimensione sonora è infatti stata incanalata attraverso contesti ed esperienze come veicolo di partecipazione attiva verso l’emancipazione dell’utente. La musica è una risorsa unica nell’accensione di incontri sociali, nonché nella promozione di relazioni fra partecipanti e con il sistema. Tuttavia, la creazione di un’esperienza significativa sulla base di tale potenziale si è spesso arenata nell’intento di soddisfare utenti con formazione variabile sull’argomento. Le differenze di vissuto musicale si annullano nel contesto milanese dell’istituzione Casa Verdi, fondata da Giuseppe Verdi per consentire agli artisti in pensione di mantenere la loro dignità e il loro stile di vita intriso di musica tra colleghi, abitando in una struttura per anziani culturale e vivace. Le restrizioni imposte dalla pandemia di COVID-19, tuttavia, hanno fortemente limitato l’equilibrio delle attività e delle relazioni degli Ospiti, tra loro ed esternamente. Il tema della scarsa connessione sociale viene affrontato nel progetto tramite il design di un sistema interattivo basato sulla professionalità musicale, che permette agli Ospiti anziani di rivivere i propri ricordi e le emozioni di carriera scambiando consigli ed esperienze personali con giovani studenti, ospitati in un edificio separato dell’istituto. Dopo un’attenta formulazione e validazione di un primo concept basato sulle informazioni raccolte, il sistema bilaterale viene prototipato attraverso touchpoints digitali per studenti e anziani, per i quali l’interfaccia è mediata dal coordinatore delle attività durante un laboratorio di routine, integrando l’interazione in un’abitudine comunicativa. Il prototipo viene testato e valutato nella sua usabilità e impatto emotivo e, infine, vengono tratte alcune conclusioni sugli obiettivi della sfida raggiunti, le lacune del processo, i miglioramenti e le potenziali espansioni per gli sviluppi futuri del progetto.
