The Hill academy of arts. Rehabilitation of a linear connection to the Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon

The research is part of the project for a contemporary intervention within the historical and patrimonial context of Lisbon. Its main objective is to study the adaptation of current architectural safety and comfort standards for educational spaces, directly related to music and dance. It is fundamental to consider the challenges of the future arising from technological developments and the need to promote a sustainable built environment, consistent with the final function of the building. It is intended to deepen the theme of intervention in the consolidated and ancient city, focusing on didactic architecture in its relationship with the irregular and spontaneous pattern of the historic centre of Lisbon, having been elected as the intervention area the Hill of Castelo de São Jorge (the “Colina do Castelo”) and Mouraria. It is essential to defend an architectural practice based on the continuity of the urban fabric: it is fundamental not to create an interruption in the development of the overlaps, represented in this case by the Hill, and to follow the alignments dictated by the ancient urban pattern. The project aspires to give voice to the cultural and social ferment of the neighbourhood, through an integrated intervention dictated by the transformation trends of the area. The Hill will be the subject of an important redevelopment plan by the municipality, which will create a direct link between Martim Moniz square and the Castelo de São Jorge. The intervention strategy is inserted into the redevelopment plan through an integrated intervention of recovery and redevelopment of the existing buildings along the new street, completing the urban voids present in the area, to integrate with the identity of the neighbourhood as an objective and enhancing the neighbourhood with a dynamic educational centre.

La ricerca riguarda il progetto di un intervento contemporaneo nel contesto storico e patrimoniale di Lisbona. Il suo obiettivo principale è studiare l’adeguamento degli attuali standard di sicurezza e comfort architettonico relativamente agli spazi educativi, direttamente correlati alla musica e alla danza. È fondamentale considerare le sfide del futuro derivanti dagli sviluppi tecnologici e la necessità di promuovere un ambiente costruito sostenibile, coerentemente con la destinazione d’uso finale dell’edificio. Si intende approfondire il tema dell’intervento nella città consolidata e antica, soffermandosi sull’architettura didattica nel suo rapporto con lo schema irregolare e spontaneo del centro storico di Lisbona, essendo stata eletta come area di intervento la Collina del Castelo de São Jorge (la “Colina do Castelo”) e Mouraria. È fondamentale difendere una pratica architettonica fondata sulla continuità del tessuto urbano: è necessario non creare un’interruzione nello sviluppo delle sovrapposizioni, rappresentate in questo caso dalla Collina del Castello, e seguire gli allineamenti dettati dall’antico tessuto urbano. Il progetto aspira a dare voce al fermento culturale e sociale del quartiere, attraverso un intervento integrato dettato dalle tendenze di trasformazione del territorio. La collina sarà oggetto di un importante piano di riqualificazione da parte del comune, che creerà un collegamento diretto tra piazza Martim Moniz e il Castelo de São Jorge. La strategia di intervento si inserisce nel piano di riqualificazione attraverso un intervento integrato di recupero e riqualificazione degli edifici esistenti lungo il nuovo asse di collegamento, completando i vuoti urbani presenti nell’area, integrandosi con l’identità del contesto e valorizzando il quartiere con il progetto di un dinamico centro educativo.
