In the present Master thesis work, a Hu-Washizu formulation of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) for plane elastoplastic problems is proposed. Firstly, a general formulation valid for different mixed finite elements is described. Then, starting from the Hu-Washizu functional, VEM hypothesis are presented together with all the involved terms for general order of approximation. Then, in order to validate the VEM for the simplest case of purely linear elastic behavior, two numerical examples, whose analytical solution is known, are solved in the virtual element framework and results in terms of convergence and first stress component contour plot are shown. Afterwards, the focus is put on the iterative scheme for solving the plane elastoplastic problem and on the integration algorithm of the elastoplastic constitutive law. Finally, a benchmark numerical example is presented: a perforated plate, characterized by a linear hardening behavior, subjected to stretching along its longitudinal axis, is analyzed. In order to validate the obtained results, a Matlab vs ABAQUS comparison on the reaction – deflection curve and on contour plots of mechanical quantities has been made.

Abstract
In order to validate the obtained results, a Matlab vs ABAQUS comparison on the reaction – deflection curve and on contour plots of mechanical quantities has been made.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
