Un recupero in alta quota. La funivia del Furggen a Cervinia

This thesis offers an investigation on the theme of the post ski resort in the Alps, focusing on the case study of the Furggen cable car station at the foot of Matterhorn. It starts with a study of the idea of alpine architecture and goes on retracing the historic evolution of the buildings at high altitude, getting then to the specific case of Cervinia's foundation and development as a ski-total landscape. In this panorama the Furggen station represents the most extreme attempt of conquering the mountains through the imposition of a wide-spread infrastructure system. Its audaciousness was the reason of its fascination but also the cause that led to a premature failure. In order to understand the reasons of the failure the thesis investigates his history by gathering and organizing all the available documents about it, stored in three different archives. The last step in this process of knowledge is the analysis of the building as it is today through a direct survey. The conclusion of this work lies in the definition of three different scenarios imagined for the future of the station: one stands halfway between the other two, which are extreme and opposite solutions of a same analytic process, both valid yet controversial in some ways.

Questa tesi propone uno studio sul tema del post stazione sciistica sulle Alpi, concentrandosi sul caso della stazione di monte della funivia del Fürggen alle pendici del Cervino. Partendo da un’indagine sul concetto di architettura alpina e ripercorrendo l’evoluzione storica delle costruzioni ad alta quota, entra poi nello specifico caso della fondazione e dello sviluppo di Cervinia come stazione per lo ski-total. All’interno di questo panorama il Fürggen si presenta come tentativo più estremo di infrastrutturazione della montagna e, non a caso, il primo ad andare in crisi. Per capire i motivi del fallimento la tesi prosegue indagandone la storia attraverso la costruzione di un superfondo - che raccoglie e ordina il materiale storico conservato negli archivi - e analizzandone lo stato di fatto con un’operazione di sopralluogo e rilievo diretto. Da queste premesse prendono corpo le ipotesi di progetto, condensate in tre scenari: uno intermedio e due estremi, diametralmente opposti ma esito di uno stesso processo analitico che li giustifica e allo stesso tempo prende le distanze da entrambi.
