NC2A : the new court of contemporary arts

Thousands and thousands of abandoned buildings all over the world are seen by people as just architectural corpses, as useless structures that are more a problem than an opportunity for the modern times. These constructions are nevertheless actually of great value, since in a largely globalized world they carry the identity, roots and DNA of the communities that inhabited them. In this thesis, the intention is to demonstrate the profound importance of reusing respectfully and sensibly this kind of neglected environments to create a rooted, meaningful and creative community, using Borgo Arconati in the Lombard region of Bollate as project framework. Borgo Arconati is currently the subject of a wider plan by the Fondazione Augusto Rancilio, current owners of the place, in which the intention is to restore the space creating a diverse and rich environment that could host a creative community, closely linked to the legendary design tradition of the nearby city of Milan. The intervention that will be carried out in this thesis will aim to recreate this new community in a particular building of the Borgo, the barns, and its courtyard. Both will become part of a mixed-use environment that will bring together living, working and entertainment on the same level. A very precise design methodology will be applied to achieve this: the abstract and formal integration of apparently opposite design concepts: modern design, outdoor spaces or living activities will be completely integrated with vernacular design, indoor spaces and working activities, for instance. To achieve all this, significant data about the topic, the methodology of adaptive reuse and interesting case studies will be analyzed, to arrive to the point at which the proposal for an innovative and textured community is presented.

Migliaia di edifici abbandonati in tutto il mondo sono visti dalla gente come semplici cadaveri architettonici, come strutture inutili che sono più un problema che un’opportunità per i tempi moderni. Queste costruzioni sono però in realtà di grande valore, poiché in un mondo largamente globalizzato portano l’identità, le radici e il DNA delle comunità che le hanno abitate. In questa tesi, l’intenzione è quella di dimostrare la profonda importanza del riutilizzo rispettoso e sensibile di questo tipo di ambienti trascurati per creare una comunità radicata, significativa e creativa, utilizzando Borgo Arconati nella regione lombarda di Bollate come quadro progettuale. Borgo Arconati è attualmente oggetto di un piano più ampio da parte della Fondazione Augusto Rancilio, attuale proprietaria del luogo, in cui l’intenzione è quella di recuperare lo spazio creando un ambiente vario e ricco che possa ospitare una comunità creativa, strettamente legata alla leggendaria tradizione del design della vicina città di Milano. L’intervento che verrà realizzato in questa tesi avrà l’obiettivo di ricreare questa nuova comunità in un particolare edificio del Borgo, i fienili, e il suo cortile. Entrambi diventeranno parte di un ambiente ad uso misto che riunirà sullo stesso piano l’abitare, il lavorare e le attività di ricreazione. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo verrà applicata una metodologia di progettazione molto precisa: l’integrazione astratta e formale di concetti progettuali apparentemente opposti: il design moderno, gli spazi esterni o le attività abitative saranno completamente integrati con il design vernacolare, gli spazi interni e le attività lavorative, per esempio. Per ottenere tutto questo, si analizzeranno dati significativi sull’argomento, la metodologia del riuso adattivo e interessanti casi di studio, per arrivare al punto in cui si presenta la proposta di una comunità innovativa e ricca di texture.
