The availability of maps of indoor environment is fundamental for autonomous mobile robots to efficiently operate in industrial, office, and domestic applications. Sometimes, when robots build these maps, some areas of the environments could be inaccessible, for instance because of some doors being closed. As a result, some rooms of the environments that are behind those closed doors are not mapped, potentially causing the robot having problems with navigation or localization tasks when the robot operates according to its map. In this thesis, we will provide an algorithm that completes 2D grid maps, by predicting the layout of rooms beyond closed doors. The main idea of our method is to exploit the underlying geometrical structure of indoor environments to estimate the shape of unobserved rooms. Results show that our method is capable of accurately completing the maps even when a large portion of the environment is missing and/or several doors are closed. Furthermore, we experimentally validate the quality of the completed maps by using them in planning tasks.

Abstract
Furthermore, we experimentally validate the quality of the completed maps by using them in planning tasks.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
