Ogrodzieniec Castle is one of the most famous castles in the Trail of the Eagles' Nests – the ancient Polish “Maginot Line” commenced by King Casimir the Great in the XIV century connecting two cities, Cracow and Czestochowa. Even though its fame brought it even to some worldwide known movie productions there was never any initiatives of reconstruction or facilitation of new functions. The solitary beauty of passing time seen in the existing ruins though became an encouragement to take it as a topic of this thesis. The thesis which was not an academic work but rather a long path through meanders of connections, forgotten realms and – of course – stacks of documents and even scrolls in some moments. For that reason, I hand in that work as my tribute to the place that was not just inspiration but also part of my life as place that I spent my childhood years. Due to emotional bond I wanted to create something special – as every architect would say – but this time not for myself nor people but for the place itself. Or to put it in another way, castle as a container of memory so rich and dense should be glorified, and at the same time apotheosis of the memory would be apotheosis of community itself as a relay of historical consciousness. For that reason, visitor center with flexible spaces seemed the best function for that purpose. To not disrupt the whole complex with strong accent the decision was made to work on different axes, putting attention to remaining timeless artefacts. First of the choice were gates. Gates that not only introduces the inside of the castle walls, but also to the whole decencies of story that the plot narrates. Wooden structures, destroyed by fire and time now have been reconstructed to remind about lost elements and accesses that formerly existed in the fortress and showing to visitor inapparent net of paths and connections. As well in life of everyone as well in every building that has life on its own. In that case it is hidden between existing and mossy stone walls in the northern part of the castle. Only part which is referring to old, peaked roof and wooden tower are visible from outside. Light and transparent facade while illuminated emphasizes the contours of antient walls being at the same time almost like a phantom-silhouette of fallen façade. New structures give the opportunity to discover the ruins from unknown perspective giving a glimpse of the buried in walls traces of its inhabitants. As every story also this one has to have it end. But I believe that with a contemporary approach and sensitivity we can change that and give our buildings – no matter historical monuments or not – new continuation. Sometimes as the same objects, sometimes as new functions, or even as a new entity created from old materials but after all, life will go on and thrive under different forms even though sometimes not understandable at the first glance. I hope that project will be a new life to our beloved Ogrodzieniec Castle.
