Redevelopment of the former agricultural penal colony of the Capraia island

The thesis develops the theme of the redevelopment of the former agricultural penal colony on the island of Capraia and therefore, indirectly, of the island itself. The experience of the prison on the island has lasted almost a century, from 1873 to 1986, and during this period has strongly characterized the island from many points of view. Even now, almost 40 years after the closure of the prison, the island still feels the consequences, for better or for worse, of its experience. Initially, therefore, we focused on the analysis of the island to understand its historical, cultural and landscape values, giving particular attention to the problems that currently characterize it. Once built a complete picture of the situation of the island, we have assumed a series of interventions on the territory made on an urban scale, mainly focused on the anthropized area located in the north-east of the island. These interventions, as already mentioned, are not limited to the redevelopment of the former prison and its area, but also act on the area of the village and the port, trying to work at 360 degrees on all the problems found. Subsequently we carried out an in-depth study on a more strictly projectual scale on one of the branches of the prison: La Mortola. In this area we hypothesized the requalification of the pre-existing structures together with the creation of new bodies with tourist-receptive, landscape and service functions.

La tesi sviluppa il tema della riqualificazione dell’ex colonia penale agricola dell’isola di Capraia e quindi, indirettamente, dell’isola stessa. L’esperienza del carcere sull’isola è durata quasi un secolo, dal 1873 al 1986, e durante questo periodo ha caratterizzato fortemente l’isola sotto molti punti di vista. Tutt’ora l’isola, dopo quasi 40 anni dalla chiusura del carcere, percepisce le conseguenze, nel bene e nel male, della sua esperienza. Inizialmente, quindi, ci siamo concentrati sull’analisi dell’isola per comprenderne i valori storico, culturale e paesaggistico, dando particolare attenzione alle problematiche che attualmente la caratterizzano. Una volta costruito un quadro completo della situazione dell’isola, abbiamo ipotizzato una serie di interventi sul territorio realizzati su scala urbanistica, principalmente incentrati sull’area antropizzata localizzata a Nord-Est dell’isola. Questi interventi, come già accennato, non si limitano alla riqualificazione dell’ex carcere ed alla sua area, ma agiscono anche sull’area del paese e del porto, cercando quindi di lavorare a 360 gradi su tutte le problematiche constatate. Successivamente si è svolto un approfondimento su scala più strettamente progettuale su una delle diramazioni del carcere: La Mortola. In quest’area abbiamo ipotizzato la riqualificazione delle strutture preesistenti insieme alla creazione di nuovi corpi con funzioni turistico-ricettive, paesaggistiche e di servizio.
