This work deals with numerical investigation of wire-airfoil type EHD thruster under clean air conditions, and its main objective is to provide a low computational-cost model to better target experiments with the thruster in the laboratory. The governing equations are solved using COMSOL Multiphysics® 5.6. Experimental measurements from both past and ongoing laboratory campaigns are used to validate the model. Performance is evaluated in terms of net thrust, thrust density, thrust-to-power ratio and a couple of efficiency parameters. Furthermore, new solutions capable of improving the performance of the EHD thruster are tested, each one of them enhancing particular aspects of the wire-airfoil thruster’s physics: (i) multiple emitters to thicken the ion cloud in the drifting region, (ii) thruster units in a zigzag pattern to better distribute the electric field on the collecting surfaces and (iii) a compact thruster cell to exploit aerodynamic effects observed for extremity electrodes of an array. The first two solutions exhibit a 18% increased thrust, and the third one a 35% increase, along with sensible improvements in the other performances.

Abstract
The first two solutions exhibit a 18% increased thrust, and the third one a 35% increase, along with sensible improvements in the other performances.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
