Vehicle-To-Vehicle communications pave the way towards the solutions that are deemed essential to realize future mobility: autonomous, connected and cooperative. We will present problems and criticalities of Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication technologies available today, highlighted by the results of vehicular and network simulations using SUMO and OMNET++. In particular, it will be shown how, even at fairly low vehicular densities, Dedicated ShortRange Communications (DSRC) using standards defined in IEEE 802.11p fail to provide adequate performance for V2V communications. It will then be proposed an alternative paradigm to the dissemination of Basic Safety Messages called OPEN, based on a Pullbased architecture in which informations about geographically close vehicles are explicitly requested through a Client-Server paradigm. A portion of the communications is taken out of the DSRC radio channel and it is managed in a conceptually centralized manner leveraging LTE 4G/5G cellular networks. Simulations show a clear improvement on parameters such as Age of Information and Awareness Ratio compared to DSRC. The assumptions that allow to obtain such results will be described and the aspects of practical implementation will be detailed, both at operational and economic level, making OPEN not only a theoretical exercise but a concretely realizable service.

Abstract
The assumptions that allow to obtain such results will be described and the aspects of practical implementation will be detailed, both at operational and economic level, making OPEN not only a theoretical exercise but a concretely realizable service.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
