The Covid-19 pandemic and Capital Goods Supply Chain : a multiple case study research

2020 was the year of the Covid-19 pandemic, that generated at first a sanitarian crisis, followed by a financial crisis in many companies. In the literature, there were many works studying the impact of the pandemic on many sectors, like the automotive one, or the agricultural one, but there was a lack of studies about the effects of the pandemic in the machinery sector. Therefore, this thesis wants to analyse the effect of Covid-19 on the supply chain of machinery firms, to discover how the pandemic has changed their supply chain strategy, how they reacted to it, and how they changed the relationship with their customers. The results were obtained thanks to expert interviews to eight companies operating in the Italian machinery industry. These results showed that, due to the pandemic, firms were more oriented to adopt an agile supply chain strategy. Most of the actions adopted by the interviewed firms to face the negative effects of the pandemic were related to such strategy, such as increasing the local suppliers, or changing the configuration of the products to adapt them to make components available on the market. Moreover, although the sector was hit by the limitations of the business trips across the world, that prevented interventions at customers’ factories, the companies were quite reactive in developing actions to perform these interventions from remote, or with local workers.

Il 2020 è stato l'anno della pandemia dovuta al Covid-19, che ha generato prima una crisi sanitaria, seguita da una crisi finanziaria in molte aziende. Nella letteratura erano già presenti molti lavori che studiavano l'impatto della pandemia su diversi settori, come quello automobilistico, o quello agricolo, ma mancavano gli studi sugli effetti della pandemia nel settore dei macchinari. Pertanto, questa tesi vuole analizzare l'effetto del Covid-19 sulla supply chain delle aziende di macchinari, per scoprire come la pandemia ha cambiato la strategia della loro supply chain, come le aziende hanno reagito alla pandemia e come hanno cambiato il rapporto con i propri clienti. I risultati sono stati ottenuti grazie a interviste a otto aziende operanti nel settore italiano dei macchinari. Questi risultati hanno mostrato che, a causa della pandemia, le aziende sono orientate a adottare una strategia agile. La maggior parte delle azioni adottate dalle aziende intervistate per fronteggiare gli effetti negativi della pandemia sono legate a tale strategia, come aumentare i fornitori locali, o modificare la configurazione dei prodotti per adattarli a componenti disponibili sul mercato. Inoltre, nonostante il settore sia stato colpito da delle limitazioni nello svolgere trasferte di lavoro, che hanno impedito gli interventi presso gli stabilimenti dei clienti, le aziende sono state piuttosto reattive nello sviluppo di azioni per eseguire questi interventi da remoto o con lavoratori locali.
