La "Casa colonica" e la "Casa girevole". Progetto per la valorizzazione dell'isola di Vivara tra linguaggio eclettico e vernacolare

We propose a study on the vernacular and eclecticism on the island of Vivara through a project that relates to two different realities present on the island: the "Casa colonica" and the “Casa girevole"; the first is a villa built at the end of the seventeenth century by Giovanni Guevara, Duke of Bovino, and used by Charles III in the mid-eighteenth century as a reference point for hunting on the island, the second was built on the project of an observatory by Lamont Young at the beginning of the twentieth century, but it was never completed. Following the victory of Procida in the competition for the title of "Capitale italiana della cultura 2022", the theme is investigated through the eyes of a traveler who arrives in Procida to participate in the event. The traveler will think about the relationship that Bernard Rudofsky's vernacular may have today with a reality that has had such a wide media exposure, the culmination of a process that has involved the island of Procida since the end of the nineteenth century, years in which the architect Lamont Young promoted his projects, convinced that one day tourism would be the economic engine of the coastal cities of the Mediterranean. The project on the island of Vivara aims to redevelop the island, which is currently closed to the public for most of the year and which has both an architectural deterioration and a lack of care for the tree and fauna species, through the completion of the work by Young, respecting the original function of observatory and the construction of housing for the promotion of the use of the night observatory. The intent is to encourage respectful and aware tourism of the place that hosts it.

Si propone uno studio sulla vernacolarità e l’eclettismo sull’isola di Vivara attraverso un progetto che si relaziona con due realtà distinte presenti sull’isola: la “Casa colonica” e “la Casa girevole”; la prima è una villa costruita alla fine del Seicento da Giovanni Guevara, duca di Bovino, e utilizzata da Carlo III a metà del Settecento come punto di riferimento per le battute di caccia sull’isola, la seconda è stata costruita sul progetto di un osservatorio di Lamont Young all’inizio del Novecento, ma che non è mai stata completata. Conseguentemente alla vittoria di Procida del bando per il titolo di “Capitale italiana della Cultura 2022” si indaga il tema con gli occhi di un viaggiatore che approda a Procida per partecipare all’evento. Il viaggiatore si interrogherà sul rapporto che oggi può avere la vernacolarità di Bernard Rudofsky con una realtà che ha avuto una esposizione mediatica così ampia, culmine di un processo che ha coinvolto l’isola di Procida dalla fine dell’Ottocento, anni in cui l’architetto Lamont Young promuoveva i suoi progetti, convinto che un giorno il turismo sarebbe stato il motore economico delle città costiere del Mediterraneo. Il progetto sull’isola di Vivara ha lo scopo di riqualificare l’isola, ad oggi chiusa al pubblico per gran parte dell’anno e che presenta sia un degrado architettonico sia la mancanza di cura delle specie arboree e faunistiche, attraverso il completamento dell’opera di Young, rispettando la funzione originaria di osservatorio e la costruzione di alloggi per la promozione della fruizione dell’osservatorio notturno. L’intento è quello di favorire un turismo rispettoso e consapevole del luogo che lo ospita
