This thesis work, developed in the context of the European project DC4DM, explores the ability of researchers to make sense of the overwhelming amount of information they are exposed to in the digital age. The research presented here began with the outcome of co-working sessions held with members of the DC4DM consortium between July and September 2021. These sessions resulted in the definition of six different skill areas, called drivers, preparatory to the training of future digital maturity enablers. The driver that this thesis aims to investigate is called sense-giving, i.e. the ability to create and extract knowledge from a large amount of information, select reliable sources, analyse and process information to achieve out-of-the-box thinking. This work aims to investigate, firstly, the human cognitive limitations and how they affect the human capacity for creative information processing and knowledge extraction from information. Secondly, this work aims to investigate knowledge management methods. The project, which was developed at the end of the research, aims to provide a method for approaching research, by raising the user’s awareness of cognitive limitations and by providing tools to break down the research process into manageable steps. By developing this method, the aim is to provide student-researchers with a means to facilitate a change in their research mindset.
Il presente lavoro di tesi, sviluppato nel contesto del progetto europeo DC4DM, esplora la capacità dei ricercatori di dare senso alla travolgente quantità di informazioni a cui essi sono esposti nell’era digitale. La ricerca presentata ha avuto inizio dal risultato ottenuto nelle sessioni di co-working, svolte con la partecipazione di membri del consorzio DC4DM, tra i mesi di Luglio e Settembre 2021. Tali sessioni hanno avuto come risultato la definizione di sei differenti ambiti di skills, chiamati driver, propedeutici alla formazione di futuri digital maturity enablers. Il driver che questa tesi si propone di approfondire prende il nome di sense-giving, ovvero la capacità di creare ed estrarre conoscenza da una notevole quantità di informazioni, di selezionare fonti affidabili, di analizzare e processare informazioni per raggiungere un pensiero fuori dagli schemi. Questo lavoro si propone di indagare in primo luogo i limiti cognitivi umani ed il modo in cui essi influenzano la capacità umana di elaborazione creativa delle informazioni ed estrazione di conoscenza dalle stesse. In secondo luogo, si propone di approfondire i metodi di gestione della conoscenza. Il progetto sviluppato a conclusione della ricerca condotta vuole fornire un metodo per approcciare la ricerca, sensibilizzando l’utente verso i limiti cognitivi ed indicando dei tools per suddividere il processo di ricerca in step gestibili. Attraverso la definizione di tale metodo, ci si propone quindi di fornire agli studenti-ricercatori un mezzo per facilitare il cambiamento del mindset di ricerca.
