Milano, la Ghirlanda

The subject of the research is to identify and to give evidence to all the transformations that characterized the Ghirlanda of the Castello di Milano, from the ancient times to our days. The Ghirlanda was a boundary defensive wall that had the aim to close the city from the north-western side. During its long story, it was the object of many changes, expansions, volumetric additions and demolitions, all of these were strictly linked to the political and social context of Milan. In our days, the palimpsest and the historical stratifications haven’t let any element, except for some ruins of the Ghirlanda itself, located into the Parco Sempione near the Castle. These ruins are La Porta del Soccorso, La Torre Colubrina, La Torre della Vittoria. Starting from these heritage of the past and studying the historical documents to explore the topic, we have been able to build a story of the Ghirlanda along the centuries. These insights, which are also related to the history of the Castle, has been essential to create a link between the past and the present. From the first moment studies and analysis of historical and urban background have been necessary to reconstruct the identity of the site. The critical analysis of the historical events that characterized The Ghirlanda and the Castle revealed very useful to understand the actual context. Therefore even there are no specific document that attests the presence in our days, there are some fundamental archeological ruins that are supposed to exist, the most important is the counterscarp wall of the moat of the Ghirlanda. That deduction represents an important assumption that, together with the relationship with the visible ruins in the Parco Sempione, has been a guide to the development of the project ideas. The research was structured in different parts: first, all the urban transformations that affected the study area were highlighted; then, the real project theme was analysed, that is the historical events that characterized the realization and subsequent demolition of the Ghirlanda. The final aim was to analyze among themselves the various historical phases that characterized the Castle and the Ghirlanda, dividing them by macro-historical periods, which over the centuries and with the various transformations have constituted what remains of it today

Oggetto della ricerca è quello di identificare e mettere in luce tutte le trasformazioni che hanno interessato la Ghirlanda del Castello di Milano, dall’antichità fino all’età contemporanea. Il muro di cinta, che delimitava l’accesso alla città, ha subito molteplici modifiche, ampliamenti, addizioni volumetriche e demolizioni, tutte strettamente legate alle prese di potere politico nella città di Milano. Ad oggi, il palinsesto stratificato negli anni non ha lasciato segni superficiali o elementi, fatta eccezione per alcuni resti della Ghirlanda stessa, situati nel Parco Sempione a pochi metri dal fossato del Castello: la Porta del Soccorso, la Torre della Colubrina e Torre Vittoria. A partire da questi segni del passato e indagando le fonti utili ad approfondire l’argomento, si è giunti alla ricostruzione della storia della Ghirlanda, inscindibile dalle vicende che riguardano lo sviluppo stesso del Castello, creando così un legame tra il passato e il presente. Per arrivare ad una consapevolezza tale da realizzare i progetti architettonici, è stato dapprima necessario condurre uno studio ed un’analisi di inquadramento storico e urbano che ha permesso di ricostruire la storia del luogo. L’analisi critica delle vicende storiche ed edilizie che hanno caratterizzato il contesto della Ghirlanda e del Castello si è rivelata utile anche ai fini di una consapevole comprensione dello stato di fatto. Pertanto anche in assenza di documenti specifici che ne attestino la presenza odierna, vi sono dei resti archeologici fondamentali di cui si suppone la presenza, il più importante fra tutti è il muro di controscarpa del fossato della Ghirlanda. Questa deduzione rappresenta un presupposto importante che, insieme alla relazione con i resti visibili nel Parco, ha ricoperto il ruolo di guida per lo sviluppo delle diverse idee di progetto.
